Rule #2: Commas separating c it y/state, dates × Separate different parts of address × Ex. John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England. × Separate different parts of dates × Ex. The battle of the Alamo took place March 6 th, 1863. 4
Rule #3: Commas in compound and complex × Commas before FANBOYS Ex. We could go to the movies, or we could watch one on Netflix. × Commas after dependent clause if it is first in complex sentence. Ex. If you have to ask, you should probably check your notes. 5
Rule #4: Commas with introdu ctory words/phrases × Use commas after words like ‘well, ’, ‘no’, and ‘yes’ when they are at the beginning of a sentence. Ex. Yes, you have to write these notes. × Use commas to set off expressions that interrupt sentence flow. Ex. I am, as you know, very nervous about this. 6
Rule #5: Sentences interrupter s × Use commas with direct address. Ex. Mom, I don’t want to. × Commas should surround interrupters like therefore and however. Ex. I know you’re tired of notes, however, there is one more slide. 7
Rule #6: Separating Contrast ing/Quotations × Use commas to separate contrasting parts of a sentence. Ex. This is my paper, not yours. × Use commas with quotation marks if the sentence isn’t finished. Ex. “Turn in your work, ” Mrs. Fuller stated. 8
