Third wave feminism • First and second wave (Suffrage/right to vote, own things, Pay) • (1) Responsible choice grounded in dialogue. • (2) Respect and appreciation for experiences and dynamic knowledge. • (3) the idea that personal experiences have roots in structural problems and the idea that responsible, individuated personal action has social consequences. • (4) Use of personal narratives in both theorizing and political activism. • (5) Political activism as local, with global connections and consequences.

Puck Bunny Response • This pictorial depiction of women hockey fans claimed to pay tribute to the “passionate…league’s female fans (aka - Puck Bunnies)” (Harger, 2012). • On social media women fans and feminist bloggers argued that the visual and discursive representations within the gallery and particularly the term, “puck bunny” was not a tribute but rather an insult to women hockey fans in particular, and women in general. • Emma Harger (2012) lamented, “Most of the women I know explicitly hate the term because that’s the first insult men throw at women when the man’s goal is to tell the woman that she doesn’t belong in his clubhouse. ”

Gendered sports tactics • Infantilize (Pink and Shrink) • Mavs Basketball 101 (Make women seem unknowledgeable) • Hyper-feminize (Football jerseys that are decorated, or cut down to show more skin) • Culture jamming (Doing the opposite of the dominant culture, Zeke Elliot, straight men with PINK sweatpants) • Anything to mark women as the “Other” • No male shirt sizes for USWNT • IG #femalegolfer

Mavs 101 from a participant • an overview of offense from assistant coach Kaleb Canales, who explained the basics before fielding thoughtful questions from the ladies in the group • a Q&A with new Mavericks Harrison Barnes and Quincy Acy, who were both incredibly warm and, in Barnes’ case, a very good sport about answering questions about leaving a championship team • a sit-down with an always brooding yet polite Rick Carlisle that was unbelievably cool yet also felt a little like getting sent to the principal’s office • a session with Fox broadcaster Dana Larson (the event’s only female session speaker) • and finally, a lecture on basketball rules from assistant head coach Melvin Hunt (again, the session ended before we were able to ask many questions

Examples • In some cases gendered, raced, and classed exclusions in sports fan communities can be overt, as racism, sexism, and homophobia in stadiums continues to be an unfortunate feature of game attendance. • Rachel groped by drunk guy at game, security did nothing. • Or common everyday just when men talk basketball to her they dumb it down, use over simplistic terms. • Or men saying sexist things that no one calls out, Free. Darko making a political “joke” about killing a woman

Defining In and Defining Out • When asked to describe the “perfect fan, ” she very purposefully and emphatically used the pronoun “he” in her description, and often compared herself to the “middle-aged male” fan as the standard of fandom that she did not fit, yet aspired to. ” • Particular words used to describe plays. • Some words that are not used as much, (For basketball, grace, balletic, etc. or more masculine monster game, kill, etc. )

• “My goal is to talk like a boy more. ” • According to Juliet, “As far as girls go, I have a lot of knowledge about the ins and outs, but I can’t compete on the level of guys my age who have had stats drilled into them since age five, you know? ” • For Jennifer, “typical females” are women without knowledge of the “mechanics” of the game because women tend not to play the sports in the institutional center, specifically football and hockey.

• Alanna similarly dismissed women who are “just faking it to impress a guy, ” specifically women where “it’s not really their favourite thing, but they’ll go and watch the game because he likes it. ” • This is in stark contrast to the subject positions women have typically occupied in hegemonic sports cultures–as objects of male sports fans’ consumption (e. g. , cheerleaders or sexualized/fetishized female athletes). • Pay per game. Many NBA cheering squads are composed of volunteers, but those who do get paid typically receive about $50 to $100 per game, according to a 2010 report by Christian Science Monitor.

• “Sports is supposed to be pure and asexual. It’s supposed to be about the love of the game, not the love of Aaron Rodgers’ eyes. ” • She positioned attraction to players as adulterating what is supposed to be “pure and asexual, ” and in the process defined herself out as a fan.
