To WHY WOULD YOU POST THAT? ? • Once the story spread to outside culture, LGBT • Specifically Transgender community and how you can read articles from different points of view • The reaction becomes a story, Editor’s response and Kahrl’s response • Learning opportunity for how media gets made over a long time • And how every culture has it’s own blind spots
Bill Simmons Response • Was it up to OUR standards? Is it worth it to run this piece? • Sorry, Caleb, you need to keep reporting this one. It’s not there. • He was reporting a story and verifying discrepancy issues with her background. • Outing Dr. V to one of her investors while she was still alive. • Issues to run the piece: Legal, too dark of tone, not running it, why did she take her life? • Ignorance of topic, should have discussed this before posting
Bill Simmons Response • 1. Never mentioned abnormally high suicide rate • 2. Make it clear Caleb never threated to out her • 3. Never internally discussed the possibility of outing her • 4. Botched pronoun structure GLAAD reference • 5. Phrase “Chill ran down my spine” reads wrong • 6. Never out her to her investors • 7. Caleb’s reporting could have affected Dr. V in unanticipated ways
Christina Kahrl’s Response • Pitch, cool new tool, went into background, and outing them • Transsexual have as high as 41% suicide attempt rate, 26 times national average • Should have stuck with debunking claims, dropped gender identity • Deep stealth: Did not want to be identified as transgender publicly • But also having a secret life is dangerous in a time when so many things can be discovered during background
Christina Kahrl’s Response • Bobbi Lancaster should get a shot to join the LPGA tour in 2014 • Laverne Cox’s breakthrough performance on Orange Is the New Black • Jared Leto make an unsympathetic ass of himself while taking bows for his caricature of a trans woman in Dallas Buyers Club • Ce. Ce Mc. Donald, a trans woman whose only crime was defending herself from a bigot’s assault, was released from prison last week after 19 months in jail • Islan Nettles was beaten to death for being trans in New York City — in front of a police station, in front of multiple witnesses
Christina Kahrl’s Response • Not part of her day job, she writes on ESPN. com editorial for MLB • Fundamental problem is that piece is aimed at golf readers • Mostly white, older, male audience • Reinforced negative stereotypes about trans people • Worst kind of confirmation bias
