GOLDEN AGE OF COMICS Typically said to begin in 1938 with the first superman comic This saw the rise of DC Comics and some future marvel characters Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Captain America, Human Torch Ended in the late 40’s after world war II Interest in superheroes began to diminish and publishers started turning to westerns and sci-fi This era was the birth of comics as we know them
THE COMICS CODE In 1954 comics came under attack Some experts believed that comics lead to juvenile delinquency A few cities, included OKC participated in Comic book burnings The comics code authority was formed to regulate comics
SILVER AGE OF COMICS 1956 -1970 Began with the publication of DC Showcase #4 which introduced the new flash Marvel Comics founded Marvel changed the comic game by giving heroes real world problems Fantastic four, x-men, Hulk, Iron Man, Justice League
BRONZE AGE OF COMICS 1970 -1985 Comics took a darker turn Comics featured more real world issues including drug abuse, alcoholism, and environmental pollution death of spiderman’s girlfriend Comics moved from the supermarket to the comic shop Art became more sophisticated
UNIQUE FEATURE Combine text and illustrations to communicate Comics differ from books and magazines in that the illustrations and text are integrated to form meaning Books rely on text, magazines use graphics to enhance Text gives meaning to the illustration Illustration gives meaning to the text
