COMIC BOOK ANALYSIS BRANDON DENTON
BACKSTORY • Flash takes it upon himself to protect and serve the citizens of Starling City • Police department and a group of villains team up to stop the Flash because they do not believe he is using his powers for good • They know when there is trouble, the Flash will be there • So, they set him up
IMAGERY • In this picture, the Flash is shown as dominant figure because he is larger than the two men who are hanging off of his shoulders • This makes the Flash appear somewhat “super-human” because he is larger than the average human
WORD VS. PICTURE SPECIFIC
WORD SPECIFIC • These types of frames are present when words add something or clarify a message or scene in a comic • The Flash is shown sitting with his father in a diner • There are word bubbles above their heads that show what words they are saying to each other • This is a word specific comic because without the words, the scene would not make sense to the reader
PICTURE SPECIFIC • A picture specific comic because the picture tells the story of what is happening without the use of words • The Flash is shown rescuing people from a factory with a gas leak • This gas leak is evident by the reaction of the worker in the factory as well as the visual depiction of the gas
POWER DISPLAY • At one point in the story, the Flash is shown in an image with the villains • The villains are shown as larger figures while the Flash is clearly in a position of weakness • The power balance is clearly with the villains in this scene • A picture without any dialogue can send a strong message to the reader
POWER DISPLAY (CONT. ) • Height and close-ups are another way to determine who has the power in a given scene or image • The larger a person is in the picture, the more powerful or essential to that scene they are • The same can be said for their closeness to the overall center of the picture
