Combining Like Terms and using the Distributive Property
Vocabulary • Expression – number sentence that does NOT have an equal sign Ex. 4 x – 6 x + 5 • Coefficient - Number used to multiply a variable ex. 4 x – 6 x • Term – Each part of an expression, separated by a + or - sign Ex. 4 x – 6 x + 5 • Like Term – Terms that have the same variable Ex. 4 x – 6 x • Constant – A specific value that does not change Ex. 4 x – 6 x + 5
Review what are LIKE terms those who are “dressed” alike • 5 x – 6 x • 6 y – 5 x + 4 y • -7 m -8 m – 9 m 2 • -8 – 4 + 6 t • y – 3 y + 3
Combine LIKE terms 7 m – 4 m
Combine LIKE terms -9 r + 3 r - 8
Combine LIKE terms -m -8 m + 3
Combine LIKE terms -4 + 7 g + 2
Combine LIKE terms -6 y + 4 – 3 y -8
Combine LIKE terms 9 – 15 + 7 n – 5 n
The Distributive Property • The distributive property lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately and then add the products. 8( 5 x – 3)
(3 x 20) + (3 x 15) 3(20+15) Solve the 2 expressions. What do you notice about the answers?
Distributive Property • To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parenthesis • 3(20+15) = 3 x 20 + 3 x 15 • a(b+c) = a x b + a x c
