Combining Gantt charts and PNTs Project management seminar
Combining Gantt charts and PNTs Project management (seminar)
Why translate a network to a Gantt chart? • Gantt chart is easy-to-understand by ‘unskilled’ people. It is especially useful when presenting to the top management. • Progress can be easily displayed on it. • To visualise floats and activity times. Effective explanatory and teaching instrument. • Resource allocation can also be performed on it.
Two ways of translating networks into a bar chart • Calculating activity times and locating these on the bar chart. • Drawing activities directly onto a time-scale, using the node numbers ensuring correct relationships (time-scaled network) • Time-scaled network has two types – Ao. A type – Ao. N type
The Ao. A type time-scaled network • Mark activities by nodes (events) • Any dummy must be drawn in as a vertical line with its head and tail node-labels • Activity bars will fall from top-left to bottomright. Dependent activities are always lower in the chart.
The time-scaled network (Ao. A) 2 7 1 0 a 0 15 1 4 4 25 4 free float 3 burst 23 d 20 15 c b 23 15 2 a c 15 3 10 5 10 13 8 b 0 7 d merge 30
Dummy activities on a time-scaled Ao. A network 15 15 a 1 2 20 0 3 0 20 20 20 5 c b a b dummy c 4 25 25
Time-scaled Ao. N networks (example 1) • Re-draw the first Ao. A project as an Ao. N network: 0 0 0 0 6 7 7 a 6 7 0 17 0 c 13 13 10 23 START 0 0 20 FINISH 0 0 15 b 0 15 0 20 d 15 15 5 20 • On Ao. N networks start and finish activities should be created if there are no single starting/ending activities. 20
Translate standard Ao. N to a timescaled network 5 0 10 7 15 17 20 23 25 FINISH START a c b d 30
Time-scaled Ao. N network (example 2) 1. Re-draw the second Ao. A into an Ao. N network : 5 0 0 0 15 a 0 0 5 5 15 0 20 20 START 0 0 0 25 c 0 0 20 5 0 25 20 25 FINISH 25 25 20 b 0 0 20 2. Translate it to an Ao. N type time-scaled network. 0 25
Solution 0 10 5 15 20 25 FINISH START a b c 30
Time-scaled Ao. N network (individual exercise) 0 2 0 0 0 0 2 0 10 c 2 8 10 0 a 0 2 3 2 2 START 0 0 0 5 5 7 d 5 0 3 5 5 10 0 13 e 10 3 0 13 0 FINISH 13 13 0 10 b 5 5 13 10 Translate the traditional Ao. N network above into above to an Ao. N type time-scaled network. 13
Solution 13 15 10 5 0 START FINISH c a d b e 20 25 30
