Combining and Simplifying Algebraic Terms
7 x + 4 • Coefficient – a term or number in front of a variable. This number is multiplied by the variable. Term - stands alone and is not next to a variable. Variable – a letter of symbol that represents an unknown number or a thing.
x y x² a r b² • Variables are like species of animals. • Different species of animals can’t mate and produce (fertile) off spring. A dog and cat can’t mate and produce a dat.
x y x² a r b² To be able to combine like terms, the terms must: 1. Be the same variable 2. Have the same exponent 3 b + 4 c + 2 b = 5 b +4 c x² - 3 c + 3 x² = 4 x²-3 c
z= p= g= Combine the like terms A. 4 z + 6 g + 2 p + 3 z + 5 p + 1 g 4 z + 3 z = 7 z 2 p + 5 p = 7 p 6 g + 1 g = 7 g Combine all the like terms in a new algebraic expression: 7 z +7 p + 7 g
c= p= g= Combine the like terms A. 10 c + 4 g + 5 p + 15 c – 12 p - 3 g 10 c + 15 c = 25 c 5 p +(-12 p) = -7 p Combine all the like terms 4 g + (-3 g) = 1 g in a new algebraic expression: 25 c + (-7 p) +1 g
s= p= w= Combine the like terms A. -4 s - 6 w + 8 p + 12 s – 10 p + 13 w -4 s + 12 s = 8 s 8 p + (-10 p) = -2 p. Combine all the like terms -6 w + 13 w = 7 w in a new algebraic expression: 8 s + (-2 p) + 7 w
z= b= x= • Use the distributive property and combine the like terms Combine 5 x + 3 x = 8 x and • 3(4 z + 5 x + 6 b + 3 x) rewrite the algebraic expression. • 3(4 z + 8 x + 6 b) 12 z + 24 x + 18 b 3(4 z) = 3 x 4 = 12 z 3(8 x) = 3 X 8 = 24 x 3(6) = 18 b
X= X²= y= Combine the like terms 5 x + 7 x² -y + 4 x – 15 x² + 4 y + x² 5 x + 4 x = 9 x 7 x² + (-15 x²) + x² = -7 x² -y + 4 y = 3 y Combine all the like terms in a new algebraic expression: 9 x + (-7 x²) + 3 y Or 9 x -7 x²+3 y
X= X²= y= y²= Combine the like terms: 5 x y² 4 x² 6 y 3 p 8 x -9 y² -3 y 2 x 5 x + 8 x + 2 x = 15 x y² + (-9 y²) = -8 y² 6 y + (-3 y) = 3 y Combine all the like terms in a new algebraic expression: 15 x - 8 y² +3 y + 4 x² + 3 p p=
