Warm up activity 3 Th H 6/ 5 1 1 - Example T U 1 5/ 4 4 2 5 2 3 4 6 2 5 Just by looking at it. Does it look correct? The Units and the Tens Column are correct because he has borrowed across 9 The person has borrowed from the Thousands column but forgot to take 1000 away leaving 6 instead of turning it to 5 The person has borrowed the ten and has changed the 5 digit to a 4
Now we shall move onto partitioning a number to help us solve this additional sum: Just like the column method we can use and split up the digits in their Hundreds, tens and Units 643 + 25 = 668 600 40 3 20 5 600 + 60 + 8
Now we shall move onto partitioning a number to help us solve this subtraction sum: Just like the column method we can use and split up the digits in their Hundreds, tens and Units 622 667 - 45 = 600 60 7 40 5 600 - 2
Which is the better method to use? Column or partitioning method? Why? 439 + 27 = 651 – 35 =
I think it would be easier to do column method for both as I need to carry over and borrow. 439 + 27 = 651 – 35 =
In the second sum I notice that in the tens columns the digits 5 and 3 do not add up to 10 or beyond and in the units or ones column, the digits 1 and 5 do not add up to or beyond 10 either. I need to use the column method for both. 450 + 27 = 651 – 35 = In the first sum I notice the tens columns, the digits are 5 and 2, they do not add up to 10 or beyond and in the units or ones column, the digits 0 and 7 do not add up to or beyond 10 either.
Fluency of thought – thinking about place value and using it quickly!! You notice that it is addition of 3 tens 567 + 30 = You then move to the tens column and make a mental note of the digit – 6 which represents 6 tens As you can see the digit has increased by 3 making the number go up by 10’s 597 6+3 =9
Fluency of thought – thinking about place value and using it quickly!! You notice that it is subtraction of 3 tens 567 - 30 = You then move to the tens column and make a mental note of the digit – 6 which represents 6 tens As you can see the digit has decreased by 3 making the number go down by 10’s 537 6 -3 =3

and Ruth is are twins and are very good at maths. 1. Amy answer completely wrong because she They both make a calculation of the sum, but needed to borrow a ten from the tenssame column for some reason they column) come updigit with different turning the 2 (tens to two 1 (tens) answers. Is making anyonethe right? Explain 8 your answer column), unit answer (which she. got right). 17 -9 = 8 2. This then leaves only 10 so we have to borrow Ruth copied out the from the hundreds (digit 4 turns into 3) column to first number wrong turn the 1 into 11 in the hundreds column 1227 3. Now we can calculate 11 -4 = 7 1249 4. So, 300 – 200 = 100 so she should have written 0028 1 not 0 5. Then she needed to calculate 2 -1 to write the digit 1 2427 – 1249 2427 1249 The answer should have been 1, 178 0028 ANSWERS 2227 1249 0978
