The Shooting On April 20, 1999, 2 male students who were attending Columbine High School at the time, walked into the school cafeteria at approximately 11: 10 a. m. and placed 2 duffel bags containing bombs set to explode at 11: 17 a. m. The bombs failed to detonate, which ultimately resulted in a shooting spree that began at approximately 11: 19 a. m. in which the 2 boys opened fire on students outside of the school The 2 boys then went into the school library and gunned down many more students By around 11: 35 a. m. the 2 suspects had already wounded 20 students and killed 12 others, including a teacher Then by 12: 00 p. m. the 2 shooters turned the guns on
Suspects Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, were the 2 suspects of the Columbine Massacre Harris and Klebold did not have a clean record prior to the shooting, as a year before they were arrested and sent to a Juvenile Diversion Program for stealing items from a van Also prior to the shooting, a police report was filed against Harris by a fellow student, Brooks Brown, claiming Harris threatened to kill Brown and had written on the internet that he would like to kill people The pair also made home videos before the attack, referencing to what they were going to do and apologizing to their parents for it After the shooting, according to police investigations that were released, Harris and Klebold were apart of a group called
Aftermath After the brutal massacre, much evidence was released by the police and many began to point fingers and blame others for the clear foreshadowing the 2 suspects presented that was failed to be seriously investigated or acknowledged in which could’ve prevented the shooting Due to this, many schools in America and even more today, enacted a zero tolerance policy regarding disruptive behavior and threats of violence from students Mark Manes, the man who sold the guns and rounds of ammunition the day before the shooting to Harris and Klebold, was sentenced to 6 years in prison Some of the injured victims or families of the killed victims also filed lawsuits against the school and police
