Core concepts: Colour and Colour combinations. Rationale: To introduce the children to the colours and possible colour combinations through play and investigation. This will actively involve the children in their own learning. This will inform them about light and colour.
Objectives: To enable the children to: 1. 2. 3. 4. To identify the different colours. To explore the possible combinations of colours. To investigate the effects of different lights in the classroom. To investigate the splitting of white light using a prism.
Description of Activities: Path of discovery….
Day One: Story to introduce the concepts of colour and light to the children. Opportunity to explore the tools which were left by the Wizards. (coloured glasses, cellophane pages, transparent pages, mirrors, Kaildeoscope). Game: Identify basic colours. ◦ Hula hoop/Sheet of paper of different colours. Children first identify the colours. They then find items of this colour in the classroom.
Day Two: Children go on a fictional Journey to the Magicians Castle to explore different colours and their effect on the world. (Looking through coloured cellophane) Predicting colour changes.
Day Three: Integration with art to discover the colour combinations possible when mixing colours. Children explore by mixing different colours. Only primary colours on the table, red, blue, yellow.
Day Four: Rainbow world. Looking at colours in our world. White light/ sunlight. What colour is sunlight? Using a prism.
Materials Required: Story: the Three Wizards. Colour Equipment: Cellophane (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple) Light bulbs: green, red, blue. Coloured Glasses Kaliedoscope Mirrors Transparent ‘Paper’. Prisms Paint: Primary Colours A 3 Paper
Class Setting Whole Class for storytelling. Collaborative Groups of 3/4 for light activities and painting. Working together to discover and identify colours. One set of materials per group to encourage teamwork.
