Colorado State Library SWIFT Migration to Prospector 2020
Colorado State Library SWIFT Migration to Prospector 2020 / 2021 1
SWIFT Migration: What is SWIFT? SWIFT = Statewide Interlibrary Loan Fast Track SWIFT is a program, continuing on even through platform changes. Part of Colorado Library Law: Part 3: 24 -90 -302 Colorado Virtual Library creation - components - access. The library (CVL) shall have the following components: . . . (a) A connection to the online-catalogs of the holdings of Colorado libraries; . . . (e) An interlibrary loan system facilitating resource sharing throughout Colorado; . . . 2
SWIFT Migration: Why Migrate? Current platform – OCLC VDX Software is no longer being supported by OCLC and will soon be discontinued. State Library wants: • to maintain the ability for smaller and less resourced libraries to continue to borrow and lend freely with other institutions within the State. • the choice of software to be as inclusive as possible, encouraging participation from as many institutions as possible - maintaining a viable resource pool. • to continue to pay for the cost of participation for the smaller and less resources libraries. • to find a way to grow participation in the statewide program. 3
SWIFT Migration: Current Landscape • About 316+ libraries (public, academic, schools and special) use SWIFT. • The State Library funds the annual maintenance and support contract. Participating Libraries are not charged to use the service, receive support or training. • Has seen attrition over years as some institutions find the additional workflow to participate cumbersome/time consuming. • Few carrots available to encourage larger institutions to continue to participate, except for their desire to help maintain and support the Colorado resource sharing landscape and spirit. 4
SWIFT Migration: Current Landscape 5
SWIFT Migration: Why Prospector? • Already an established service within the state. • Used by most of the large public libraries and all the academics • Would be the closest we are likely to get to a statewide catalog. • Less training required for participants (new participants only). • Less disruptive to the Colorado ILL landscape • Would increase statewide resource sharing by increasing participating institutions in a shared service. • Colorado ILL staff wanted Prospector for the next gen SWIFT. 6
SWIFT Migration: New Landscape 7
SWIFT Migration: Timeline Phase 1: Bring all SWIFT only institutions to Prospector for staff initiated borrowing. Began in August 2020 and will continue through December 2020. • SWIFT libraries no longer able to initiate borrowing requests close of business November 13, 2020 using VDX software. • SWIFT Prospector libraries will need to continue to use both systems until December 31, 2020. • VDX will be shut off January 1, 2021 Phase 2: Bring capable institutions online for lending. (Does not include institutions without a compatible ILS, or no ILS at all). Winter 2021 Phase 3: Patron initiated requesting. Winter and Spring 2021 8
SWIFT Migration: Oddities to work with Correctional Facilities: • 20 of the 30 correctional facilities will be joining Aspen. Cat in 2022, so they will not be brought into Prospector fully until that time. • Remaining 10 Federal facilities will be brought on with other SWIFT institutions. Schools: • Schools will not be included directly in the SWIFT Prospector migration. • Alliance and CSL staff are working on mapping partner arrangements, setting up schools as pickup locations with their closest public library. More information will be shared with schools and public libraries soon. 9
