Overview of Growth Model �CDE Introductory Video �Target is proficiency in three years or 10 th grade, whichever comes first �Status and growth data �Comparison with academic peers
Two ways to use growth data � 1)Reflection on past practice ◦ Did students who had higher growth receive different instruction, intervention, and/or home resources that students with lower growth did not? ◦ Are students who had lower growth considered average, gifted, struggling? ◦ Was a student’s growth enough to have them eventually be proficient
Two ways to use growth data � 2) Address students who are currently not making enough progress ◦ Students not on track to “catch up” and be proficient in three years or by 10 th grade ◦ Students who need a boost of motivation ◦ Make sure students are receiving interventions and extra help needed ◦ Action research – what is making a difference in the data?
Individual Student Data �Look at Student A and Student B growth printouts and discuss as a group: ◦ Are these two students academic peers in math, reading, or writing in 2007? ◦ For Student B, what kind of growth is needed this year in order for the student to be proficient in writing (high, typical or low)? ◦ Describe how you might use this data with students and/or parents.
School and District Data �School. View website �Adequate growth = what a typical student in the school would need for growth in order to be proficient or advanced in three years or by 10 th grade. �Median growth (Observed growth) = The middle percentile of all students after ordering them from highest to lowest.
Groups �Catching Up ◦ U or PP – Can they catch up to proficiency with current growth? �Keeping Up ◦ P or A – Can they stay proficient with current growth? �Moving Up ◦ Proficient – Can they reach advanced with current growth?
