1970 Colorado Events: ● ● ● On October 23, 1970 the final segment of I-270 is opened, completing the 5. 2 mile interstate An oxygen tank exploded on Apollo 13 space flight to the moon, although they managed to get back to Earth on April 17 th, 1970. In 1970 the Census enumerates that the population of Colorado grew by 25. 85% since 1960. World Events: ● ● ● Biafra surrenders after 32 -month fight for independence from Nigeria(Jan. 15) Nixon authorizes U. S troops to invade Cambodia(May 1) Senate repeals Gulf of Tonkin resolution(June 24)
1971 Colorado Events: ● ● On October 3, 1971 The United States Department of Transportation opens the High Speed Ground Test Center just east of Pueblo. On May 19, 1971 The Denver Art Museum opens its Gio Ponti designed North Tower. World Events: ● ● ● Anti-war militants attempt to disrupt government businesses in Washington(May 3) Pentagon Papers were published(June) The 26 th amendment lowers the voting age to 18.

World: ● ● ● (May. 15) American merchant ship Mayaguez seize by cambodian forces, is rescued the marines. (July. 15) Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft take off for U. S. soviet linkup in space. (September) President ford escaped two assassination attempts. One on attempt was on the 5 th and the other on the 22 nd.

(Mar. 1) The final segment of I-225 is opened in Denver, completing the 11. 959 mile length of Interstate Highway I-225. (May 21) A flash flood in Big Thompson Canyon kills 143 people just hours before the Colorado State Centennial. (July 31) ● ● ● Court rules that death penalty is not inherently cruel or unusual and is constitutionally acceptable form of punishment. (Jan. 21) Scientists report using bacteria in lab to make insulin. (May 23) Nuclear- proliferation pact, curbing spread of nuclear weapons, signed by 15 countries, including U. S. and USSR.
