COLOR THEORY The Meaning of Color
Color in Design Knowing how to use color in photography can benefit you as a photographer to get different reactions when people view your photos. Although color use can be powerful, it is also subjective. What can evoke a reaction from one person may evoke another reaction from another person. Things like personal preference and cultural background might contribute to this.
Color Theory is a Science Studying how colors affect people is a science and some people specialize in it. Changing a hue or saturation can evoke a different feeling. Cultural differences sometimes mean that a color that might represent joyful and uplifting in one country can be depressing in another.
Primary Colors • You cannot make these colors by mixing other colors. • Pure colors • ROYGBIV (red, yellow, blue are spaced apart) • These colors can make other colors • These are natural colors found in the earth
Secondary Colors • • Made by mixing 2 primary colors Orange (yellow, red) Violet (blue, red) Green (yellow, blue)
Tertiary Colors • Made by mixing 1 primary color with 1 secondary color • Y-G • Y-O • R-V • B-G • B-V
Monochromatic colors are any one color plus black or white = tints & shades • Tints: any color with or plus white • Shade: any color plus black
Complementary Colors • Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. • Colors that are equal distance apart • Not neighbors 1. blue/orange 2. Yellow/purple 3. green/red • Creates strong contrast but dull if mixed
Analogous • 3 colors next to each other on the wheel “neighbors” • Yellow, Yellow-orange, Orange • Red, Red-violet, Violet • Green, Green-Yellow, Yellow
Common Meanings of Color Red: Passion, Love, Anger Orange: Energy, Happiness, Vitality Yellow: Happiness, Hope, Deceit Green: New Beginnings, Abundance, Nature Blue: Calm, Responsible, Sadness Purple: Creativity, Royalty, Sadness Black: Mystery, Elegance, Evil
• Gray: Moody, Conservative, Formality • White: Purity, Cleanliness, Virtue • Brown: Nature, Wholesomeness, Dependability • Tan or Beige: Conservative, Piety, Dull • Cream or Ivory: Calm, Elegant, Purity
Your Assignment Objective: Photo 2 students will increase and apply knowledge of color by using color schemes in their photographs to evoke emotions from the viewer through 2 photographs that embodies aesthetics and sets a mood.
Fine Art Photography • Refers to photographs where the photographs are evocative and personal. The value of the photo lies merely in it’s aesthetic beauty or appreciation of beauty rather than scientific, product, or illustrative value.
