Family Reunion for Our Future September 19, 2009 / Edward Waters College A large community-wide health fair was held to educate, provide resources & have some fun for the neighborhood residents & their families! • 40% of all women giving birth in 2000 -03 were overweight or obese prior to pregnancy. • Duval County has one of the highest teen HIV/AIDS rates in the state. • STI rates in Duval County women are 40% higher than the state rates & can impact birth outcomes.

Family Reunion for Our Future Held to sound the alarm about the number of infants who die before their first birthday in Jacksonville. • Pink & Blue Parade – 75 empty strollers – African American babies who died last year – Lead by Andrew Jackson drum line down Kings Road – City officials, health advocates & community residents pushed strollers • Family Reunion Health & Awareness Activity – Promoted by traditional & nontraditional mediums More than $20, 000 was raised!

Grassroots Events Reaching the families impacted by infant mortality

Barbers for Babies August 22, 2009 / The Cut Above Barber Shop 12 barbers participated in a workshop to learn more about infant mortality & the importance of responsible fatherhood. • More than 40% of all babies born each year are to single mothers in NEFL & nearly ½ of all pregnancies are unintended. • Fathers have a direct & measureable impact on child development, educational attainment & delinquency, as well as financial stability.

More than 200 men, women & children attended the awareness event hosted by the BIHCC. Free food, drinks, music, games & gift bags were given. Free haircuts were given to children. Other fatherhood events will be hosted because of the excitement and buzz from the barbers & other participants!
