The Primary Colors • The basic 3 colors • Cannot be created by mixing pigments together. • All other colors are made from these

The Secondary Colors • Made by mixing equal parts of 2 Primary colors.

The Tertiary Colors • Made by mixing equal parts of a primary and a secondary color. • Named by the Primary color first.

Value • The lightness or darkness of a hue • Amount of black and white in a color

Tints White + color Also called pastels

Tones Color + Gray OR Color + the color’s compliment

Intensity • The brightness or dullness of a hue—based on its purity; • Changed by mixing a hue with its complement • Creates a tone High Intensity Low Intensity

Warm Colors • The reds, yellows, and oranges of the color wheel • Seen as advancing • Make a space appear smaller • Evoke a feeling of warmth and excitement

Cool Colors • The blues, greens, and violets of the color wheel • Seen as receding • Make a space appear larger • Evoke a feeling of coolness, calmness and rest

Neutral Colors • Also called achromatic (without color) • Colors not found on the color wheel • White, black, and gray are true neutrals • Brown, beige, tan, and cream are used as neutrals
