Vocabulary • Monochromatic – • Complementary – • Analogous – • Split-complementary – • Triadic – • Neutral –
Vocabulary • Hue – • Intensity – • Value – • Tint – • Shade –
Psychology of Color • Color affects people & how they feel about the space occupied • Reds, Oranges & Yellows = Warm Colors • Greens, Blues & Violet = Cool Colors • Blacks, Grey, Whites, = Neutral Colors
Color Spectrum • Range of all existing colors • All derived from 3 basic colors – Red, Yellow & Blue – also called the Primary Colors • Mixing, lightening and darkening makes all other colors • Mixing equal parts of two primary colors makes Secondary Colors – Red + Yellow = Orange
Color Spectrum (2) • Mixing one primary and one secondary color results in an Intermediate Color – Also called Tertiary = Third, in order – Red + Orange = Red-Orange • When writing the name of intermediate colors the name of the primary color is ALWAYS listed first. – Blue + Green = Blue-Green
Color Characteristics • Colors have three characteristics hue, intensity, and value • Hue – name of the color we see, blue, green, red (light or dark…hue stays the same) • Tint = hue + WHITE ex. Pink = red + white • Shade = hue + BLACK ex. Maroon = red + black
Color Characteristics (2) • Value – entire scale from tint to shade of one hue • Intensity = hue + complement – Blue + Orange (lower intensity of blue NOT orange) • Neutral Colors – White is ABSENCE of all color – Black is Mixture of ALL colors – Grey is Black + White
Color Systems • Brewster System (Prang System) – Most widely known (12 hue color wheel) – Based on 3 primary colors – Mixed to give 3 secondary colors – Primary and Secondary mixed to give Tertiary • Shown on pg 110
Color Systems (2) • Ostwald System – Based on mixing white with hues to create base colors – 24 hue wheel – Double cone (pg 114) shows value range of each hue – True hue is seen at “equator”
Color Systems (3) • Munsell System – Scientific description of color (chroma) – Based on 5 hues – Called a color tree – Neutrals shown in this system only
Color Considerations Get lots of samples before final decision One color should dominate (holds it together) Warm colors stand out/Cool colors recede Texture of furnishings can change appearance of color • Natural light gives varies, can be warm or cool • •
