Kepler telescope Launched in March 2009 with the aim of gathering data about bodies in other planetary systems. Uses transit photometry to detect the presence of planets – if the light from a star dims periodically this indicates a planet passing in front of it.

EM-drive Originally designed around the year 2000 by Roger Shawyer. It’s currently being tested by scientists at NASA, and is scheduled by a different organisation for testing in space on board a cubesat.

Media ‘Interstellar’ was praised for integrating real physics into its plot. Newer forms of media are being used to promote space exploration – many recent missions have had livestreamed coverage.

Space. X The Interplanetary Transport System is planned to carry 100 tonnes of cargo, and will stand taller than Big Ben. The ‘Interplanetary Spaceship’ stage of the ITS will be taken to orbit, then refuelled before travel by a tanker launched separately.

Additionally, Elon Musk is aiming for self-sufficiency within 100 years. Major long-term economic drivers for continued colonisation may include access to the asteroid belt for mining.
