Why did they fail? Ribault settlers returned to France for supplies didn’t plant crops or prepare for winter they rebelled; tried to sail back to France Rescued by an English ship

Why did they fail? poor soil--farming was difficult stole Indians’ food Indians soldiers killed about ½ of the Spanish
San Felipe Spanish built colony on the site of old Charlesfort lasted for ten years before they were attacked by the Native Americans
Albemarle Point-Success! Finally!! English settlement Chose an easily protected learned from the Spanish location failures--didn’t do the same thing renamed it Charles Town after the king

Carolina Colony Founded as a proprietary colony The king gave land to 8 Lords Proprietors (businessmen) to repay debt (in reclaiming the throne after the English Civil War) Hope land to make a profit by charging a quitrent on the Quitrent-like paying rent

Fundamentals Constitutions of Carolinas Policies Set to attract settlers (religious tolerance) up a social class system Favored the elites—give titles to large landholders (this part never happened) Headright System—led to establishment of plantations based on cash crops
Who came to the Carolina Colony? Fundamental Constitutions guaranteed religious freedom (French Huguenots and Jewish) first settlers were English from Barbados— brought the slave system with them Made plantations wealthy

Why come to Carolina? Waterways—easy to transport cash crops Cattle raised in the colony were sold in the Caribbean Rice became SC’s 1 st cash crop “Carolina Gold”
Naval Stores (pitch and tar)—made ships water tight (came from pine trees) Tar—made by burning pine branches Pitch—made by boiling the tar
