Vision Statement In the fall of 2019, we asked participants in both the faculty and staff and student forums to begin thinking about a College Vision. They were provided with the following guidance: “Whereas the mission statement describes BMCC and communicates college priorities, a vision statement is designed to communicate what BMCC hopes to accomplish in the future. The mission represents the current state of the college while a vision represents future achievements. College vision statements exist to offer a shared understanding of the future direction of the college. Given this description, how do you hope that BMCC would be described in 10 or more years? ” The following draft vision statement reflects an analysis of the ideas, concepts, and themes provided and almost all the language is word for word. In other words, this vision statement is designed to represent the voice of the BMCC community. Please use the sheet provided to provide comments and in 15 minutes, we will report out.
Proposed Vision Statement BMCC will be nationally recognized for improving student learning and success, excellence in research and knowledge creation, and for advancing equity and socioeconomic mobility through the transformative power of education. BMCC faculty and staff are committed to strengthening our culture of care, and take responsibility for creating the conditions under which all students feel welcome, valued, and that they belong, and all members of the BMCC community can thrive. Teaching and learning at BMCC, both inside and outside the classroom, is culturally responsive and sustaining, deeply engaging, and celebrates the rich diversity of experience and knowledge students bring to the College. Faculty, staff, students, and alumni are proud of BMCC, and of our significant impact on the lives of individuals and families, and a thriving New York City.
BMCC Values In the fall of 2019, we asked participants in both the faculty and staff and student forums to begin thinking about BMCC’s values. They were provided with the following guidance: “The core values of a college reflect a set of agreed upon principles, beliefs and ideals that guide the activity of faculty, staff, and administrators. These values should represent the expectations that the college community holds itself accountable to demonstrating on a daily basis. They should also reflect an emotional connection to the mission. Please work as a table to develop no more than five words, statements, or phrases that communicate the story of what the college values as its most enduring and important beliefs about the role of BMCC. ” The 14 values provided reflects an analysis of the ideas, concepts, and themes provided and the descriptions reflect the exact wording provided. Please take about 10 minutes to walk around the room and place seven stickers on what you believe should be BMCC’s values. We will then open a brief discussion.
List of Values • Community • Care • • Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Inclusion • Affordability • Innovation • Personal Growth • Teaching and Learning • Student-Ready • Sustainability • Collaboration • Social Justice • Collegiality • Equity
