Application Forms: Golden Rules • Always complete in black pen or wordprocess • Always complete very neatly in CAPITAL letters or print (printing is when you don’t join up your writing) • Photocopy the form and complete a draft copy first to avoid mistakes. You can ask a teacher or parent to read it through and help with any corrections. Once this is done you can copy out neatly on to the proper form. Application Forms: Golden Rules 2 • Make sure your facts are accurate. You can present things in the best way possible but do not lie. • Read the form very carefully and follow the instructions. Complete every section required. • Ensure the form arrives before the closing date. If you post it the day before it probably won’t arrive in time – most employers/colleges will not look at late applications.

Application Forms: Supporting Statement Make sure you have used all the space given for supporting statements or questions such as “Why do you want to come to this college”. It is important that time is spent on these sections, they are written well with good use of English and grammar. Remember a supporting statement is your “shop window” and you need market yourself in the best way possible. Describe what you can offer eg: skills such as dance, music, arts and sports. Talk about achievements in and out of school, work experience and volunteer work. Detail any hobbies/interests.

Application Forms: Research Do your research so you are well informed about the college/sixth form/employer you are applying to. Check that the options you are applying for are actually available – look at A-level grids, prospectuses etc.

Application Forms: Referees Ensure you include the right number of referees requested. Make sure you ask permission from the person you are naming as a referee. (It is ok to use your YLC or Headteacher without permission). If you need a reference to be completed before you send in the form then ensure you give your teacher/YLC enough time to complete it.
