What can you do before you start at college? We understand that the transition from school to college and to Advanced Level study can be difficult, especially in these challenging times. We are here to help you settle in and develop the skills necessary to succeed both personally and academically. Research has shown that ‘emotional wellbeing is a clear indicator of academic achievement, success and satisfaction in later life’. * In addition, ‘social and emotional competencies have also been found to be a more significant determinant of academic attainment than IQ. ’** With this in mind, we would encourage you to practice the ‘Five Steps to Wellbeing’ which are: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Connect Be Active Keep Learning Give Take Notice There is advice on how to embed these into your life at: https: //www. mindkit. org. uk/5 -ways-to-wellbeing/ If you are particularly struggling with the current circumstances, visit the website below: https: //www. nhs. uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/improve-mental-wellbeing/ *Gutman, L. & Vorhaus, J (2012). What happens when you start college? One of the most important people you will

What happens when you start college? One of the most important people you will meet is your Personal Tutor who will welcome you to college, help you to settle in and meet with you regularly via weekly tutorials and one-toones. They will also work with the careers department to help you to make an informed choice about your next step into further study, training or employment. Your Lead Tutor will also support you throughout your time in college and work with you if you require more intensive interventions. You can also access our wonderful counselling service or meet with our Medical Welfare Officer if you require first aid or advice regarding wellbeing and physical, mental or sexual health. Our Safeguarding Leads will help you in situations where you, a family member or friend need input from other agencies or are in need of protection at home or in college. We are looking forward to meeting you and supporting you on your academic and personal journey with us.
