College of Creative Arts MID-YEAR ACADEMY LEARNING MODULE January 2021
College of Creative Arts What is Mid-Year Academy? • First-year students who were placed on Academic Probation due to their Fall 2020 GPA are required to participate in the University-wide Mid. Year Academy program. • This program is designed to help identify the reason(s) why your Fall ‘ 20 GPA fell below the required minimum of a 2. 0. • It is also designed to develop strategies to move forward so that you have a successful Spring ‘ 21 (both academically and personally)!
College of Creative Arts What is Academic Probation? • Academic Probation is when a student’s overall GPA falls below a 2. 0. - A student is considered to be in “good academic standing” when their overall GPA is a 2. 0 or higher • You are currently on Academic Probation and will remain so until your overall GPA rises above a 2. 0. • There is a difference between a semester GPA and an overall GPA. The overall averages all your semester GPAs together. • Even though your Spring 2021 semester GPA may be above a 2. 0, what counts is the overall GPA you have at the end of the Spring semester.
College of Creative Arts Scenario #1 John is a CCA student whose Fall GPA (with 12 credits) was a 1. 50. Because it was below a 2. 0, John was placed on Academic Probation. John’s spring semester 2021 GPA (with 12 credits) is a 2. 25. This is much approved. Good job! Will John still be on Academic Probation at the end of the Spring 2021 semester?
College of Creative Arts Scenario #1 The answer is YES. When calculating John’s GPA from both semesters, his overall GPA comes out to a 1. 875 which is still below a 2. 0. This means John will remain on Academic Probation for another semester.
College of Creative Arts Academic Suspension • Any time a student’s overall GPA falls below a 2. 0, this student will be placed on Academic Probation. • Students whose overall GPA falls below a 2. 0 for 3 (three) different semesters will be placed on Academic Suspension at the end of that 3 rd semester. • Academic Suspension means that a student will be unable to register for any WVU classes for one full year.
College of Creative Arts Scenario #2 Brenda is a CCA student whose overall GPA was below a 2. 0 in Fall 2020, Spring 2021, and again in Fall 2021. Brenda was placed on Academic Probation each of these semesters – which means a 1 st, 2 nd, and a 3 rd AP. Will Brenda be place on Academic Suspension at the of the Fall 2021 semester?
College of Creative Arts Scenario #2 The answer is YES. Brenda will be on Academic Suspension for one whole year because she was on Academic Probation, with an overall GPA falling below a 2. 0, for (3) three semesters.
College of Creative Arts Scenario #3 Chris is a CCA student whose overall GPA was below a 2. 0 in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. He was placed on Academic Probation both these semesters. In Fall 2021, Chris raised his overall GPA up to a 2. 2. Good job! However, in Spring 2022, his overall GPA fell below a 2. 0 again. Will Chris be place on Academic Suspension at the of the Spring 2022 semester?
College of Creative Arts Scenario #3 The answer is YES. If a student is placed on Academic Probation 3 times, regardless if the semesters are consecutive, the student is suspended. Therefore, Chris will then be placed on Academic Suspension for one full year.
