Education Scotland key drivers • Legislative responsibility for assuring and improving the quality of provision in Scotland's colleges rests with SFC under the terms of the Further and Higher Education (Scotland ) Act 2005 • Education Scotland HM Inspectors supports SFC to fufil these duties through a programme of scrutiny and support activities negotiated annually • Colleges and HM Inspectors use the quality framework - How good is our college? to support this work. • Inspectors engage regularly with all colleges and undertake a range of scrutiny activities. To support good governance, they provide regular reports to college committees and the Board as required • Ownership for evaluation leading to improvement at all levels of college operation is the responsibility of colleges, supported by HM Inspectors • Colleges should engage in a cycle of evaluation determining and driving continuous enhancement Document title For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators
Since Covid-19 • Education Scotland has introduced a refreshed Corporate Plan to set out how we will support the education system, including colleges, during the recovery period • Formal inspections have been paused across early years, primary and secondary provision • HM Inspectors have been assigned to ‘localities’ (Regional Improvement Collaboratives) to provide recovery support for establishment and local authorities Document title For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators
College sector • To support the college sector during 2020 -21, link HM Inspectors will work flexibly and responsively to provide support and challenge as required • HM Inspectors have developed support materials to assist colleges to plan and manage adjustments in response to the pandemic, and support improvement • The materials focus on four themes: • Curriculum, learning teaching and assessment • Services to support learning • Transitions • Evaluation to facilitate improvement Document title For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators
Support materials • Individual colleges and link Inspectors will determine how best to make use of the support materials • They provide an opportunity for college staff to reflect on approaches adopted, to identify what is working well and what requires adjustment or improvement • College link Inspectors will attend meetings (virtually for now) where appropriate to gather relevant information. • Best practice approaches will be captured and promoted more widely across the sector • Collated information will inform discussions held with SFC and SG where appropriate Document title For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators
