COLLEGE ASSEMBLY FALL 2019 PRESENTATION GOALS Encourage Grade
COLLEGE ASSEMBLY FALL 2019
PRESENTATION GOALS Encourage Grade 12 students to continue future planning Inform Grade 12 students of requirements for College acceptance (does your present timetable meet the requirements for the program you are interested in? ) Advise Grade 12 students of College planning and application tools
WHY COLLEGE? college tuition average $3500 -$5500 vs. university tuition average $6000 -$9000 Shorter program length (average 1 -2 year programs) 75% of future jobs will require postsecondary education Studies indicate that our economy will need 6 times as many College grads than University grads
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE! College programs offer real-life and job– related practical experience through co-op, internship and work placement opportunities. Specific job preparation vs. general degree Small classes with personalized instruction offers greater chance of success
PROGRAM TYPES Certificate – 1 year Diploma – 2 years Advanced Diploma – 3 years Bachelor’s Degree – 4 years * Different from a College/University collaboration (ie. York/Georgian Nursing where student takes program at Georgian but degree is awarded by York) * College acts like a University (awards University degree) * Must have 6 Grade 12 U/M level high school courses to apply Post Graduate Certificates – taken after a student completes a College or University program
MANY COLLEGES OFFER HIGHLY COMPETITIVE PROGRAMS Some programs offered by Ontario colleges may be highly competitive; a program for which the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of seats available for the fall start date For these programs you are strongly encouraged to apply before the February 1, 2020 equal consideration date Ontariocolleges. ca has a complete list of Highly Competitive Programs and admission requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 30 Credits 40 Hours of Volunteer Service OSSLT (or OLC Course) Grade 12 College English Some programs will require other specific Grade 12 credits ex. Math or Science
POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Additional Course Requirements vary BOTH by program AND school – do your research! Example: MAP 4 C and MCT 4 C are different! MAP 4 C – most business programs MCT 4 C – tech/trades/computer science Arts programs may require portfolios or auditions to be accepted It is up to YOU to make sure you have the courses you need for the programs to which you are applying!
PROGRAMMING IS IMPORTANT! Look at the students below – one has lower grades at the University Level, the other has higher grades at the College Level. Which student do you think would have a better chance of College acceptance? Student A Student B MAP 4 C 1 – 92 % MHF 4 U 1 - 75% ENG 4 C 1 - 94 % ENG 4 U 1 - 77% SPH 4 C 1 - 88 % SPH 4 U 1 - 72%
PROGRAMMING IS IMPORTANT Many schools/programs do not distinguish between U or C level courses – ie. Power line Technician program at Algonquin College THEREFORE…Having U/M Level courses is not always an advantage! BE SURE TO Check with your school’s policy
DON’T FORGET TO LET US KNOW … If you are currently taking or have previously completed courses in night school, private school and/or on-line – we need to make sure these courses are on your transcript!
IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT GRADE 11 MARKS: Note the differences in what colleges and universities consider for admission decisions
FOR UNIVERSITY: Final Grade 11 U/M marks are used in: December and January for preliminary offers for those with high averages admission average calculation for early offers of admission, where Grade 12 U/M marks are incomplete or not available; February as part of the calculation for early offers, in combination with available Grade 12 marks
FOR COLLEGE: Grade 11 final grades are considered where the required grade 12 course is in progress. These Grade 11 marks will be used as placeholders for incomplete grade 12 courses Example: When an applicant is enrolled in a required grade 12 English (and has no previous final mark for grade 12 English), evaluation for admission will be based on the final mark for grade 11 English (conditional upon successful completion of grade 12 English course).
COLLEGE: ADMISSION TO HIGHLY COMPETITIVE PROGRAMS When an applicant does not have a midterm or final grade for their Grade 12 requirements, their Grade 11 final grade will be considered when ranking for competitive programs It is recommended that applicants try to have Grade 12 requirement courses for a highly competitive program completed in first semester of your last year*** Example – Durham College: Where grade 12 marks are not yet available, the grade 11 mark for the same subject will be substituted. If a grade 11 chemistry mark is not available, the average final chemistry mark from the previous year’s qualified applicant pool for the same program will be used for ranking!
