College Application Seminar Fall 2018
The Ontario Application Process o o o All Applications to OCAS n Ontario College Application Service Application cost - $95 n For 5 programs – no more than 3 at any one college n Additional programs are not possible All applications are done on-line At home or in Guidance Application due date February 1, 2019 for equal consideration with all applicants (even if you aren’t starting until January 2019 Should be done before Christmas holidays
Communication o You must have an e-mail address before you apply (it should be suitable) If you change your email, notify Guidance and OCAS) o Check it often after you apply o This is the way OCAS, the colleges and Guidance prefer to communicate with you
What the school sends October o Demographic information n Final marks of completed grade 9 to 12 courses n First and second semester courses you are taking n Community involvement and literacy test info November n Application data sent to colleges February n First semester final marks n Update semester 2 courses April n Second semester mid term marks July 2019 n Final second semester marks n Proof of graduation n o o
Admission Date o o o All high school applicants will hear their admission decision on or after February 1, 2019 Most applicants must respond to an offer of admission by May 1, 2019 or lose their spot Applicants should check their offers of admission for exact deadline dates.
Admission Requirements o o Different programs and colleges have different required courses – n English, Math and Science There are recommended courses as well for each program Admission may be based on: n All grade 11 and 12 marks OR only required courses n Admission is based on formulas individualized and set by each college Research on ontariocolleges. ca and on individual college websites – it is the student’s responsibility to completely research your program choices – especially highly competitive programs
Admission Requirements o Highly Competitive Programs n n n This is a program where there are more qualified applicants than the program’s capacity These programs don’t usually accept applications after February 1 Consider applying for another program as well Consider applying at a more remote college Strive to get the highest marks you can achieve (the cut-off could be much higher than the minimum marks required)
Highly Competitive Programs o o o Many Health and Medical programs i. e. Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Paramedic, Radiography Social Service Worker, Early Childhood Education Veterinary Assistant and Technician Some Aviation programs, Powerline See www. ontariocolleges. ca/apply/highlycompetitive-programs
Multiple Offers of Admission o o You may be offered admission to several or ALL of your 5 choices You may only accept ONE offer You must respond to OCAS with the program you wish to accept If you accept a second program, the first will be cancelled
Timelines o October / November n n n o December or earlier n o Apply on-line (recommended to be done with a guidance counsellor) January n o Research On-line Ontario College Application is available Colleges will begin to receive applications October , 2018 Buffer month to fix any payment problems or amend applications February 1, 2019 Application Due

Research o Check the college viewbooks in Guidance n n n o o o New Programs Open Houses Preview Days Check bulletin boards outside guidance Check each college’s website Make an appointment with your guidance counsellor
Types of College Programs o o Certificate Program – 1 year Regular Diploma – 2 years n o Technician Advanced Diploma – 3 years n Technologist
Types of College Programs o o o Graduate Certificate n must already have a college certificate or diploma Bachelor’s Degree - 4 years n University admission requirements (6 4 U or 4 M courses) Collaborative Program n joint education between college and university – you may receive both a diploma and a degree.
Co-op Programs o o o Many programs have a co-op component. This costs extra money. There is no guarantee that you will get a co-op placement. The extra money gives you access to the co-op employer list. Many co-op placements are paid positions which can offset the cost of your education.
Financing Your Education o Scholarship Seminars n n n Early December You will receive an e-mail notification of the exact dates and times Make sure you have a valid e-mail on file with the guidance office

My Blueprint o o Please use www. my. blueprint. ca/tvdsb as a research tool to help determine your future Complete the high school planner section by inputting all the courses you have taken or will be taking over your high school career Use your credit counselling summary to ensure accuracy After completion you can make an appointment to review it
