TASK 1 What do you understand by the term Collage?
Meaning of Collage • From French word “coller” that means "to glue” • This refers to the gluing of different or differently textured materials onto a surface to make a composition. • In collage work, different materials are glued onto a surface to form an interesting composition.
Meaning of Collage • A collage is a visual representation made from an assembly of different forms, materials onto a surface to create a new whole. • This term was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20 th century when collage became a distinctive part of modern art
Meaning of Collage. • An artistic collage work may include newspaper, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork, photographs, and such, glued to a support.
SOME MATERIALS FOR COLLAGE INCLUDE; Support (cardboards, stiff cards, canvas, ply wood, etc. ) Paint Paper (new papers, colored paper… and paper for sketching) Differently textured textiles • Glue/adhesive Varnish Frame Bottle tops Banana fibers, etc.
SOME TOOLS FOR COLLAGE Cutters (razor blade, scissors, knives, etc. ) Brush ( for applying glue or varnish or painting some parts of the composition) Pencil (for sketching), etc.
SOME TYPES OF COLLAGE • Paper collage • Picture/photo collage. • Textile collage • Mixed media collage
Paper Collage • This is collage constructed from paper of different types, weight, colours and texture.
Picture/photo collage • This type of collage is composed of a variety of photographs or other images glued onto a surface to make a meaningful piece of art. • A technique of collage using (parts of) photographs or photographic negatives.
Textile Collage • This collage is constructed from pieces of cloth/textile of different textures, colours, weight, e. t. c.
Mixed media Collage • Mixed media art refers to a visual art form that combines a variety of media in a single artwork. • Mixed media collage is collage that combines a variety of media in a single artwork. E. g. A collage in which some parts are painted yet others are covered by other materials.
MAKING COLLAGE WORK Collect necessary materials and tools Make sketches Transfer sketch onto support/ground Can paint some parts of the composition and then glue different objects onto support following composition Leave work to dry Trim off unwanted parts If you want, varnish and frame your work
MAKING COLLAGE COMBINED WITH PAINTING Collect necessary materials Make sketches Prepare support e. g. canvas or ply wood by priming it. Transfer composition onto prepared support Paint some parts of the composition and allow the painted parts to dry. Using wood glue or other adhesives, paste textured objects in different areas of the support, following the composition. Let work dry Trim off unwanted parts Can Varnish your work to preserve it. Frame the work.
