Researching Quotations Carmen Faye Mathes, University of Regina carmen. mathes@uregina. ca Approach Pros Cons Single Author More efficient; less room for error, especially for student researchers Monotonous and boring; abstracts research from actual archive; distances quotations researchers from overall project timeline and goals Letter by Letter (i. e. "Holistic" approach) Sense of ownership over discoveries; works better with production timeline and goals; keeps research grounded in archive More room for error; must depend on non-expert students to make judgements when collaborating
Digital Markup Will Dorner, UCF william. dorner@ucf. edu • What a digital edition needs • Transcription • Character encoding • Tagset • Undergraduate volunteer contributions • LEME (University of Toronto) provided complete transcription/encoding, but created challenges • Inconsistent markup • Uncertain or erroneous foreign character encoding • Massive filesize • Reconciliation of LEME text with previous content and project goals • Updates to the tagset as project progresses
Automation Amy Larner Giroux, UCF Identify amy. giroux@ucf. edu Split De-Warp Delineate
Architecture Connie Harper, UCF connie. harper@ucf. edu • Linux, Apache, My. SQL, PHP, Java. Script • e. Xist-db, XSL • XML markup is stored directly in e. Xist-db • API and search queries through e. Xist-db • My. SQL for the login and statistics. Also for some extra search and multiple spelling lookups. • Front end is simple HTML, PHP, bootstrap and javascript
