Germany after WWII • Yalta – US, Britain, and Soviet union agree to divide Germany. • Germany was divided into 4 zones of occupation, Britain, France, Soviet Union, and the US. Berlin was also divided in 4. • Berlin Wall – built to prevent contact between East and West. • Berlin Airlift – Soviet attempt to starve West Berlin into submitting to them. • Allied powers airlift resources to West Berlin, could have been a trigger for war.
United Nations • June 1945, 50 nations join and agree to protect members from aggression. • Large body called General Assembly, where each member nation has a vote • Security Council - 11 members, real power, investigates and settles disputes. 5 permanent members (US, Britain, France, China, and Soviet Union) – VETO power.
IRON CURTAIN § With good reason the Soviets fear invasion from the West. § End of WWII, the Soviets push Germany out of Russian occupied border nations. After the war, they stayed creating a buffer for them. Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech, Romania, Poland, and Yugoslavia. Satellite nations! § Iron Curtain (not real) divides the eastern European Communist nations (WARSAW PACT) and western democratic nations (NATO).
CONTAINMENT! • Block Soviet influence and stop communism’s advance. • Truman Doctrine – US would support countries that reject Communism, $400 million sent to Turkey and Greece to stop Communist threats there. – Controversial. • Marshall Plan – 12. 5 billion $ to European countries to rebuild after the war.
