Cognition and emotions • Most cognitive psychologists ignore the issue of the effects of emotion on cognition
Cognitive determinats of emotion (1) Appraisal of some external stimulus or situation. (2) Reactions of the body (e. g. , arousal). (3) Facial expression. (4) Action tendencies
Appraisal theory • Lazarus (1982) • Primary appraisal: an environmental situation is regarded as being positive, stressful, or irrelevant to well-being. • Secondary appraisal: account is taken of the resources that the individual has available to cope with the situation. • Re-appraisal: the stimulus situation and the coping strategies are monitored, with the primary and secondary appraisals being modified if necessary.
Evidence • Speisman, Lazarus, Mordkoff, and Davison (1964) „Anxiety evoking films“ • Smith and Lazarus (1993) „Scenarios“ • Weibel, Wissmath a Mast „False heart beat“
Perceiving the situation • Interpersonal and intrapersonal factors • Commitment and belief
Multi-level theories • Öhman and Soares (1994) „Snakes and spiders“
Le. Doux: Fear (1) slow-acting thalamus-to-cortex-to-amygdala circuit (2) A fast-acting thalamus–amygdala circuit
