Introduction In this two part presentation I will be discussing the codes and conventions of factual programming. I will discuss different types of news programming and documentary programming.
Studio News Reader They are usually based in a studio behind a desk. They speak in a strong clear tone and are dressed formal. The camera is pointed directly at the presenter only showing their top half. All the information read by the presenter must be non bias. They often introduce images or clips and there is usually a voice over while the clips or images are on screen.
Field Reporters They are not unlike studio news readers. They are usually at the scene of a story directly in front of the camera. They speak clearly and formally and all information is non bias. They are usually dressed according to the weather conditions if they are outside but otherwise dressed formally. The live reports usually go back and forth from the scene to the studio.
Interviewing is a way in which the news programme can obtain information. Interviews can take place anywhere. Interviews can both be live and pre recorded. Interviews can be written, audio or visual.
Links To Studio This is when a studio links with another studio. This is used when interviewing someone in a studio in another country. A reporter from each studio will speak to one another. A live screen showing the other reporter will appear or sometimes just a photo.
Actuality Footage This is footage taken live from the scene of a news story. This usually grabs the viewers attention as it shows what is happening at that very time. An example of this is the Manchester bombing attack at the Arianna Grande concert in May 2017.
Expository This is a documentary that exposes information on a certain topic that the public may be unaware of. This consists of a presenter or a voice over and camera footage or visual images. This shows often create a lot controversy which makes them more popular. It is very important that all content is factual.
Reflexive This is when the footage is pre recorded and then used as part of a show. They often use voice overs throughout the documentary while the footage of playing. The documentaries are usually very expressive with using things like dramatic music.
Performative This is when a person is filming themselves usually just going about their everyday life. They are usually made by film makers filming themselves at events. The person would usually use a hand held camera.
Narrativization This type of documentary is filmed and edited to be put into a story. The viewers will be taking on the journey of the story. They are based on real life events.
