Coats of Arms in Medieval Times
Why were they used? • Around the 1100 s, no one could tell the knights apart on the battlefield • So they first functioned as a sort of “uniform” on their shields • Shield emblems then became fashionable for families for themselves to have to brag about their own history • Since most people could not read, heraldry was invented. This was a way to express who you were without using words
• Heraldry was a design and short saying. • Noble families designed a coat of arms that incorporated their heraldry (their symbol, colors and maybe a short saying). Diana, Princess of Wales Dieu defend le Droit “God defends the right”
• They put their coat of arms on banners, shields, tapestries, saddle blankets, tunics and anything else they could think of. • Each part of a coat of arms has a specific meaning. • Animals or objects were used to describe character traits - brave as a lion, for example • The colors were used as symbols of character. Henry II -- The first proven arms for an English monarch.
