CO 2 DRAGSTER EVAN JOHN DEJONCKHEERE
Understand The whole assignment was to create a CO 2 Dragster, with the goal being that it moved more than 2 meters forward per second.
Explore Lets take some time to look at some CO 2 dragsters from the internet
Define The things needed are: It has to meet the requirements set by the teacher for length, width, height, etc. It has to race in the competition of all of the dragsters made by the class; which place it finishes in doesn’t matter. Wood to make the dragster Issued wheels Axils Washers
Ideate I am a one man army, making this dragster solo instead of with a group, so I need to make the design simpler than others to save time, while still having it move well compared to other dragsters. The simpler design may also allow for more time for modifications(which did happen) causing the dragster to work better overall. Having a simpler design may also allow me to be the first one cutting my block of wood.
Prototype I made the prototype through drawings on a sheet of paper which was reviewed by the teacher, then made into a larger scale drawing on a pre-measured sheet of paper. I also made a model on Autodesk, a CAD program, which I them sent it through a wind tunnel simulation.
Refine The dragster, once created, was too heavy weighing ~126 g, almost twice as much as the lightest dragster created in the classroom environment area The dragster was also bland looking with no visual appeal whatsoever. It could use a design and something covering the whole thing.
Solution I found that the one thing that the program could tell me nothing about was the weight of the dragster, which I shaved down from ~126 g to ~109 g, which improved overall performance. I also found that painting the dragster allowed for better aerodynamic performance overall, causing the dragster to move ever so slightly faster than before
