Brief Status Report on Detector 16/02/17 WGM 297 11
Pixels § § § Barrel Pixels have arrived. All pixel detectors are at CERN!!! Challenge is to have a working, physics-ready detector that can be incorporated into the HLT as quickly as possible Installation plan: BPIX: 27/28 Feb; FPIX: 7 and 9 March. Problems appeared with FUSES in DC-DC converters, observed first on FPIX § Root cause is known and mitigations have been developed Final Cold Test of BPIX at P 5 is underway § Some problems have surfaced – investigations ongoing § Affects 1/8 of ¼ of the BPIX (two outer layers) § § Last services near the detector are being installed Run Coordination is preparing for pixel alignment and calibration running as soon as device is ready Software is well along but optimization and fine tuning in next two months Readout can now operate at ~100 KHz with pileup ~70. Improvements will still be undertaken to gain headroom We will lose some luminosity at the beginning of the run since some commissioning must be done with collisions. We expect to “effectively” recover it through higher efficiency, better resolution, and lower fake rate. We will work to minimize this loss. 16/02/17 WGM 297 12
HE: What is Decided So Far § Do not install the full 36 Readout Boxes in 2017 § Install one Readout Box (HEP 17 HE Plus End #17) immediately § Read out with full DAQ, trigger, timing system on noise and cosmics § Validates removal and installation procedure § Full electronics chain § Source calibration § TC will attempt to make a plan for installing full HE upgrade in 2018 in “normal” YETS 16/02/17 WGM 297 13
HE: What is not decided § Whether to leave HEP 17 in for data taking § Many issues related to reconstruction software, simulation, triggering, physics objects (JETMET) § Whether it can be calibrated and operated at a level consistent with the performance goals of the HE § Physics Coordination has set specific targets § Whether to do the full HE upgrade in YETS in 2018 § An acceptable schedule may not be possible § Other more serious problems might need to be dealt with § The risks of a new detector that will be in for only one year may not be worth the rewards, especially if the radiation damage is less than expected § However, the experience in operation HE might reveal something for the barrel whose upgrade will be with us until the end of CMS § See detailed discussion in the talk “Wrap up on EYETS Status” from the last day of CMS week The story continues! 16/02/17 WGM 297 14
Plan 1 Proposed Timeline - I § Perform HEP 17 Co-60 calibration/check with Phase 0 (HPD+QIE 8) on Feb 4 (or Feb 11) weekends § Removal of HPD/QIE 8 and backplane on Feb 6 (or Feb 13) after sourcing § Allow measurement of HPD PDE spectra § Phase 0 Readout Modules will remain intact § Installation of HEP 17 Phase 1 (Si. PM/QIE 11) § The day after the above § Commissioning and operational experience for about 3 weeks § Including Co-60 calibration of HEP 17 Phase 1 § All set of local runs (PED, LASER) § Test full trigger primitive generation chain (front-end to L 1) § Participation in global running § In parallel, the implementation of the offline software Plan 1 workflow is in progress § MC studies of the impacts of Plan 1 on Jet. MET and trigger performance should provide some of the critical answers by the end of February 16/02/17 WGM 297 15
Plan 1 Proposed Timeline - II § CMS decision to be made at the beginning of March on a) keeping HEP 17 Phase 1 in, additional weeks of operational experience with HEP 17 phase 1 prior to CMS closing (still sufficient time to revert to phase 0 in case of late issues) b) revert HEP 17 to Phase 0 in early March, leaving abundant time to restore, re-commission (including another Co-60 calibration) and re-operate HEP 17 Phase 0 prior to CMS closing Ø Going through the Phase 1 installation, commissioning and operations exercise is still considered important/worthwhile 16/02/17 WGM 297 16
Run Coordination: Preparation for the Startup § Lots of details in Plenary Run Coordination talks at CMS Week Plenary Session (https: //indico. cern. ch/event/602633/timetable/ ) § The LHC Performance Workshop, a. k. a. the Chamonix meeting (https: //indico. cern. ch/event/580313/) took place from Jan 23 -27. § Commissioning Plans are being developed § Midweek Global Runs have started § MWGR#1 took place last week § commissioning plans for upgraded HE RBX 16/02/17 WGM 297 17
Mid. Week Global Run 1 16/02/17 WGM 297 18
MWGR 1 § Central goals for MWGR 1: • • • Trigger and run overnight with as many subsystems as available; Confirm rates as expected for cosmics (i. e. as expected according to actual availability of muon systems to join); • Confirm readout timing is the same as 2016; Start commissioning of upgraded HE RBX (HEP 17) if available to join global § Main achievements: • • Run with strips sending fake events. All the chain worked fine Run in the night with available detectors in: (parts of) ES, CSC, DT, HO, HB, HE and trigger • Initial assessment: rates and r/o timing OK (more analysis coming) • HEP 17 included in global Friday night 16/02/17 WGM 297 19
Commissioning HEP 17 § Arranging for week of Feb 20 th dedicated to HEP 17 commissioning § DAQ and L 1 trigger resources will be available for this effort § Then participate in MWGR 2 (1 -3 March) § § Main items are stress of the system and commissioning of § read out chain § trigger primitives § full trigger chain (up to HLT depending on code availability) Many concerns about trigger, reconstruction software, calibration, databases, and object performance § Different longitudinal segmentation § Have software for 32 HPDs or 32 Si. Initiatives still ahead of us 16/02/17 WGM 297 41
Initiatives on the Horizon § Sustainability Issue – ability of CMS to continue to run until 2035 § Main issues § Loss of knowledge (retirements etc. , departures, change of assignments within CMS) § Poor or missing documentation § Technological obsolescence § Start after we are taking data smoothly § Upgrade Coordination after TDRs are approved § Need to start working on this in the late spring to smoothly connect to end of TDRs § The preferred method is to create a “project office” to make the transition to a new arrangement, which will be a plan that is developed by the SP and Upgrade Coordinator and requires MB endorsement and CB approval § From the CMS Constitution: “A Project Office may be set up to assist the Coordinator. Its membership must be endorsed by the Management Board and approved by the Collaboration Board. 16/02/17 WGM 297 42
