Clouds, Everywhere Clouds! What’s the Weather?
Standards • Standard 3. 2. 7 Observing Clouds and the Weather (includes BLM Observing the Clouds)
Did you know? Some clouds make rain, snow, sleet, or hail, called precipitation. Some clouds don’t make anything at all. Can you tell what kinds of clouds will make precipitation?
First let’s look at the types of clouds. Cirrus Cumulus Stratus Nimbus
Cirrus • flat or sheet like • patchy or wispy • wider than they are • thick usually seen in nice weather & • • Cumulus puffy flat bottoms low in the sky usually seen in nice weather but if they grow tall they could bring rain
Nimbus thick taller than they are wide gray (because they are full of precipitation) sometimes look like they cover the whole sky & Stratus sheet-like and gray low to the ground fog is also known as a stratus cloud usually brings precipitation
Now that you have learned a little about the different kinds of clouds, you will do some activities so that you can show what you have learned. • First thing you will need to do is visit this webquest and complete it.
On the Webquest and After • When you are in the webquest, you will need to record all of the information you get on the page provided. It is on the webquest. You will print it when you are done. • When you have collected all of your information, you will need a different page to record the clouds and weather for 2 school weeks. I will give you this page. • After you have recorded the weather for 10 days, you can make your own weather predictions for 5 days on a separate page that you can get from the webquest.
I will be here to help you! Good luck! Now, let’s go find out “What’s the Weather”!
