Cloud on the Horizon Moving P 6 EPPM to the Oracle Cloud Prepared by: Brenda Morrow, Alectra Utilities Session ID: 112050
Cloud on the Horizon Safe Harbour The following presentation references actual events that occurred in the recent past. None of this was made up and it is a true-life depiction of our experience. While moving to the cloud has been great for us, the cloud may not be right for everyone. Please consult your Oracle professional to determine if the cloud is right for you. Cloud on the Horizon Background: • At Horizon Utilities, we had been using P 6 v 7 since January 2013 with 4 users in the Project Controls Office • We upgraded to v 8 and rolled out to 68 users in Engineering, Construction, Supply Chain and Finance in January 2014 • As of October 2016, we were on P 6 version 8. 3 with a Microsoft SQL database • No use of BI Pub, Analytics or Team Member • Accessed database directly via SQL April 2 -6, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV USA #C 17 LV
Cloud on the Horizon The decision was made to move to the cloud for the following reasons: • Expanding user base (to 150 licenses) would have required large capital expenditure for license purchase in addition to annual maintenance fees • Internal IT support at Horizon Utilities – no DBA, patches/upgrades not implemented, disaster recovery not tested • Increased and on-going third-party support costs • Increased use of internal resources for P 6 administration • Cost/benefit analysis was in favour of the cloud model - no appetite to invest capital in the large amount of new licenses that would be required. Cloud on the Horizon Prior to Migration: • Upgraded from v 8. 3 to v 8. 13/Microsoft SQL • Many trial runs – tried to upgrade to v 15 on-premise but data issues caused failures in loading • Cloud required v 16. 1 for implementation • Oracle set up cloud environment with custom URL • We provided user list to Oracle who did bulk load April 2 -6, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV USA #C 17 LV
Cloud on the Horizon Migration Preparation: • Volantic and Oracle Support’s assistance • Migration process: • • • Obtained a backup of the MS SQL database (v 8. 13) Upgraded MS SQL database to v 16. 1 Ran migrate to move from MS SQL to Oracle SQL Exported and sent to Oracle to load to cloud staging environment Performed Test/UAT in staging environment • Data Cleanup Issues encountered: • • User records in UPKLIST, PROJSHAR, and USESSION tables Blank names in View. Pref and Account tables Baseline process sequences out of order Team Member indexes corrupt April 2 -6, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV USA #C 17 LV
Cloud on the Horizon Migration Weekend (October 2016): • Production P 6 down at 6 pm Friday • Upgraded to v 16. 1/Oracle SQL on-premise: 6 pm-11 pm • Data verification (on-premise): 11 pm-2 am • Data export and upload to Oracle: 2 am-3 am Saturday • Data import to the cloud: 3 am-11 am • Data verification (in the cloud) Post-migration (December 2016): • Upgraded to 16. 2. 2 and implemented Single Sign-on in December April 2 -6, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV USA #C 17 LV
Cloud on the Horizon Gotchas: • Java! • Many changes in v 16 compared to v 8 (standard/classic view, Java removed from many areas – such as P 6 Admin) • User Admin (OIM/Cloud Admin/P 6) • Password reset email went to spam; manually reset password instead (this is a nice feature) • No longer able to directly access database and run SQL queries • Admin Config changes handled via SR with Oracle • Can’t create custom Business Models in Analytics April 2 -6, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV USA #C 17 LV
Cloud on the Horizon Overall comments/feedback: • Be familiar with the Service Request (SR) process • Oracle was very helpful prior to obtaining approval for moving to the cloud by providing assistance with obtaining Senior Leadership buy-in • Communication from our CSM was a bit lacking during actual weekend upgrade April 2 -6, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV USA #C 17 LV
Cloud on the Horizon Since go-live: • A few issues, created SRs and worked with Volantic and Oracle support to resolve Surprise Benefits: • Team Member – rolled out internally and externally • Reporting – BI Publisher, Analytics • Staging environment • Disaster Recovery • P 6 Professional 1 -click install April 2 -6, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV USA #C 17 LV
