Closing Remarks John Womersley Fermilab D Collaboration Meeting
Closing Remarks John Womersley Fermilab DØ Collaboration Meeting, November 2001 John Womersley
News and Reminders • Parking – on east side of Swenson Road is illegal once again • Office moves – please complete your moves as quickly as you can! – there are new tenants waiting for the space • 802. 11 b wireless LAN – yes, it will be installed in the Outback • equipment was ordered 10/25 John Womersley
Tangible Progress • Anyone who has attended the plenary sessions at this meeting will have seen evidence of clear, significant progress in every area of the experiment: Talks by – Detector • Fiber tracker/preshower electronics installation (Davis) • L 2 Trigger (Varelas) – Software and Computing • L 3 filters (Souza) • Data processing and access (Merritt, Diesburg) – Physics • Object ID (Büscher, Butler, Zutshi) • Luminosity tools for analysis (Begel) • Physics signals (Schwartzmann) – Run 2 B • Technical Designs (Kotcher, Cooper, Partridge) John Womersley
Goals and Milestones • We have set ourselves some aggressive goals for physics results on the timescale of Moriond 2002: – W’s and Z’s, jets, J/ , K 0, B lifetime, multilepton states • These goals define the priorities and milestones for physics and ID groups – notably certified physics objects by January 10 • … and for operations – notably an emphasis on quality, performance reporting • These are ambitious goals but recent progress is very encouraging John Womersley
B tagging IP signif. Plot impact parameter significance for these tracks • Frank Filthaut John Womersley # Tracks First hint of an impact parameter signal from B’s Very encouraging!
Jet cross section All p 10. 07. 01 data; Run I jet response and showering corrections applied • Sasha Kupčo John Womersley
Forward J/ Full dataset; ~ 600 J/ signal events • Roger Moore, Adam Yurkewicz John Womersley
Closing thoughts • The past six months of detector commissioning have often seemed to be filled with problems — but the measure of success is not the absence of problems, but rather our ability to overcome them • I get a real sense now of significant forward momentum within the collaboration and the experiment I believe DØ will have a good 2002 John Womersley
DØ Institutional Board Meeting, 11/8/01 • Videoconferencing – much discussion in AC • IP video; ESnet test site works but not reliably • new videoconference room in DAB in FY 02? • simple changes (microphones)? – we will set up a task force to make recommendations John Womersley
Control Room Shifts • • • We had problems staffing control room shifts in September – especially SMT and CAL After shutdown, we will need to add a CFT/CPS shifter – will only worsen the shortfall Dmitri provided a spreadsheet of all shifts done July-September – I sent e-mail to 25 institutions that did < 50% expected shifts – we found some errors in the counting, but the intention was not a “judicial process” — a request for information • what can you do to increase participation? – thanks to all those who have already responded in that vein John Womersley
