CLIMATE CHANGE
Global warming is the warming of the world’s temperatures as a result of rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. It is caused primarily by the burning of fossil fuels (ex. Coalburning power plants, cars, etc. )
Positive effects of warmer temperatures • More days at the beach! • Longer growing season • Farming would become possible in many areas that are too cold • Melting Arctic ice opens up the Northwest Passage (good for shipping routes)
Negative effects of warmer temperatures • Species forced out of their habitats • Uneven distribution of the world’s precipitation • World forests would be damaged • Rising sea levels (flooding) • Increased disease • Weather refugees
Smog and Climate • VIDEO • According to recent NASA research, coal-fired powerplants in Asia are fueling weather changes in our continent. • Air-borne particles are called Aerosols • Aerosols capture water particles and result in greater cloud cover • VIDEO
Q • 302 -306 • What is sustainability? • Take notes on the different ways to measure sustainability and livability • 70 -71 • Q 1, 2
Greenland is melting VI D E O
Q • Over the last ten years, how much ice has Greenland lost? • What is dark ice? Why is it a problem? • What is calving? • What will happen when it melts?
