Motorway Riding
Motorway Riding You should consider the following points if your journey includes use of a motorway: 1) The speed and volume of traffic using the motorway. 2) The limited frequency of rest and refuelling areas. 3) The dangers of stopping on the hard shoulder. 4) The levels of attention & concentration required to ride safely at speed. 5) The legal limitations on certain vehicles using the motorway.

Motorway Riding At 70 mph you will be travelling at 31 metres PER SECOND (over 100 feet per second). YOU NEED TO GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO REACT !!! Increase the time in which you can react by: Using good observation in all directions and as far forwards as possible. Using the ‘two second rule’ and maintaining a safe separation between you and the vehicle in front, extending this in bad weather conditions. Avoiding coarse manoeuvres at speed to maintain control Giving signals in good time. Give drivers time to see them. Consider using your headlight to warn other road users of your presence.
Motorway Riding Do not overtake if it will block the entry of the vehicle you are overtaking onto the motorway itself.
Motorway Riding Use good observation and life savers so you maintain an awareness of the traffic situation around you.
Motorway Riding HOLD BACK UNTIL YOU CAN SEE IT IS CLEAR TO OVERTAKE.

Motorway Riding When considering moving from Lane 1 into Lane 2, you need to be fully aware of any vehicles that may be coming into Lane 2 from behind. Use good observation and planning to avoid coming into conflict with vehicles approaching from the rear.
Motorway Riding Be careful of vehicles that may cut in at the last moment to use the motorway slip road. Watch out for traffic merging on slip roads ahead.
