Goal towards clean and affordable energy important in India? India is projected to be a significant contributor to the rise in global energy demand, around one-quarter of the total. However, as of 2016, more than 207 million people in India do not have access to electricity. The government’s National Solar Mission is playing an important role in the work towards renewable energy, and interventions in rural electrification and new ultra-mega power projects are moving India towards achieving universal energy access. Alongside the goal of bringing electricity to hundreds of millions of people, India has also set significant voluntary targets under the Paris Agreement on climate change. It has committed to reduce emissions intensity of GDP by 33 -35 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels, and to boost renewable energy capacity to 40 percent by 2030, as well as to ensure that 40 percent of electricity requirement will be met through non-fossil fuels.

Oberoi Mall, Mumbai’s landmark shopping destination located in Goregaon, will be observing Earth Hour on 30 th March from 8: 30 pm to 9: 30 pm. In keeping with Earth Hour’s mission to help create a Greener Earth, Oberoi Mall will be completely shutting off the facade lights and keeping its common area with minimum lights during the Earth Hour this year. Godrej Green Building Consultancy Services (GBCS) provided a comprehensive green solution which included Facilitation, Retro- Commissioning, Energy Audit and Waste Stream Audit. The mall’s green initiative has been rewarded with a host of benefits.
INITIATIVE BY OBEROI MALL TOWARDS CLEAN ENERGY Water Management: Retro-fitting of plumbing fixtures with aerators enabled a 30 -40% water use reduction. Adding sensored taps to decrease water wastage Energy Management: With software tools like the Energy Star Portfolio Manager, a structured approach was developed to map the energy performance of the mall year-on-year. Some of the implemented measures include lux level sensors for lighting, occupancy sensors to control lighting and group control for elevators.
Step taken by The Shree Ayyappa Temple towards clean energy One of the biggest temples in the western suburbs, trusts in Mumbai has set up a hybrid system, a combination of biogas plant coupled with solar panels, to not only produce electricity from wet waste generated in its premises but also with a target to gradually shift to renewable energy for power. Harish Mistry, a resident of Malad who has helped the temple trust by providing the biogas plant and setting up solar panels, said that this would soon become a model temple for visitors to understand renewable energy and its generation

CHALLENGES • As one of the busiest malls with an average footfall of 35, 000 daily, 250 popular brands and 14 mega-screens, the process of unloading construction materials during open hours/day time was a major challenge. Therefore, the logistics for material supply at the site were planned and executed only during night time. • As the solar plant was a rooftop installation positioned right above the 14 screened multiplex, Cinepolis, it was important to ensure that the movie experience was not hampered or disturbed in any way during construction. • Viviana Mall is a fully operational mall which made it difficult to shut down the premises during daytime for the purpose of integration or testing of the solar plants Working at height is always a challenge and Viviana Mall’s roof is at a distance of 16 meters above the ground level with a high curvature of 15° – 20° inclination. Which is why extreme safety measures had to be taken to avoid any accidents during the process of installation, operation and maintenance. However, as most of the construction work was executed during the monsoon season, additional safety procedures were followed.
SOLUTION • To overcome the problem of vehicle movement and to avoid any disturbance in the activities/ footfall in the mall, most of the materials were unloaded at night between 10 pm to 5 am. • Since the roof is 16 meters high with an inclination of 15° – 20°, a safety-life line was installed even before the commencement of the installation work to ensure the utmost safety of the workers. As per the Environment, Health & Safety Initiative, safety guidelines have been installed across the rooftop plant to ensure that all the set safety standards are strictly adhered to at all times. • To match the ‘Kalzip’ standing seam roof structure, special clamps were used for installation of the panels without penetrating into the roof. Additionally, for the RCC roof, portable structures were created without puncturing the roof.
AFTER SOLAR E. . . R E BEFORE SOLAR. . . • Initially, a capacity of 1089 k. W (1 MW) was installed and following the excellent plant performance, an additional 89. 6 -k. W capacity was added in September 2017. Furthermore, in October 2018, another 390 -k. W capacity of solar plant was installed. • By adopting solar power, Viviana Mall saves INR 10. 5 million annually on its electricity bill and this saving is passed on to its tenants through reduced Common Area Maintenance (CAM) charges. BENEFITS OF SOLAR ROOFTOP INSTALLATIONS Tata Power Solar joined hands with Cricket Club of India to utilise the potential of solar energy. The installation of this solar rooftop project helped to generate over 1. 12 million electricity per year, which led to 25% of savings in the power consumption cost. At present, on an average (apart from Stadium Flood lights, which run on DG), the Stadium consumes 4 lakhs k. Wh /month. However, with the new solar installation, on an average basis the consumption from the grid would fall to approximately 3 lakhs k. Wh/month.
