EHB 2195 (2004) l By 2005 -06, OSPI will provide classroombased assessment models and other assessment options shall be on the web and available for voluntary use. l By 2008 -09, school districts shall have in place in elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools – assessments or other strategies to assure that students have an opportunity to learn the EALRs… – school districts shall annually submit an implementation verification report… 2
EHB 2579 (2006) - Civics CBAs l Beginning with the 2008 -09 school year, school districts shall require students in the – fourth or fifth grades, – seventh or eighth grades, and – eleventh or twelfth grades to each complete at least one classroom-based assessment in civics. 3
Social Studies CBAs– Know and apply key concepts in civics, history, geography, economics, and social studies skills. 4
Health and Fitness Classroom Based Assessments Measures student understanding of health and fitness essential concepts for lifetime healthful living. 5

OSPI’s Recommendations for HB 2195 & 2579 l Social Studies: – One CBA per grade level or per course from 3 rd grade through high school. l The Arts: – CBPAs at Grades 5, 8, and High School l Health-Fitness: – CBAs at Grades 5, 8, and High School 7
CBA Momentum! l Thousands of teachers have enthusiastically attended CBA sessions at OSPI’s Summer Institutes, January Conferences, & regional trainings l 900 Educators attended CBA Scoring Training on Feb 6 -7, 2006 (representing districts serving 80% of all students) l Numerous districts planning for 2008 -09 using OSPI’s recommendations for CBAs 8
Funding to implement the CBAs? l $47, 000 for Civics CBAs – Pilot Projects for Districts – Regional Trainings l Summer Institutes and other conferences to prepare educators to administer the CBAs l $1. 4 million 2007 -09 budget request – Refinement of CBAs – Training – Distribution – Reporting System 9
