Classroom Procedures and Expectations We need them to be able to learn!
Coming In • • • **Come in, sit down, get your stuff out!** If you are coming to my room, come to my room. The wall outside my door is not my room. In my room there are desks. Take a seat and get comfortable once in the room. The back table is not a student desk unless I put you there. Chairs that go with the table only; they are not to be moved. If assigned a seat, seat yourself there without argument. • There is no negotiation.
Starting Class • Class starts when the bell rings. • Be IMMEDIATELY ready to listen/watch/steal. • What are you here for? Know what you want to achieve with your time in the room. • The first few minutes are the most important of each class. • You are not allowed to be in my room without materials/and or intentions to learn! • I do not lend materials; if you do not have equipment, get it from a classmate without interrupting the flow.
Teacher-directed Instruction • Listen and watch actively, not passively. • ALWAYS take notes. • Raise hand wait to be recognized to interject a thought. • When page number is cited, go there. • When board is cited, look there. • When old information is cited, think about it. • Know that lecture will only last a few minutes; milk it for all you can.
Independent Seat Work • You are expected to attack it right away and attempt it with full attention • It is for me to see inside your brain and help straighten you out, if needed • It will not drag out; it is to execute what we just practiced. You will not have more time than necessary to complete it • When time is up, switch gears to next task; it is more important to move with me than to finish every last item
Computer-based assignments • You must show your notes about what you are supposed to do in order to go to the lab. • Lab rules are the same as classroom rules. • To access me, raise your hand wait. • No listening devices may be used unless distributed to you. • On the way out of our classroom, I will tell you what row to sit on. • If allowed to seat self, choose to sit apart from distracting classmates. • If caught offsite or continuously disengaged, you will be asked to log off and sit at a designated table spot. Do it upon request, without argument. There is no negotiation. • Tasks will be given a time limit to ensure that all targets are practiced; don’t be afraid to switch although unfinished.
Group/partner work • Speak only with your designated group/partner. • Stay seated. • Stay focused on academic task. • Do not be afraid to think through the assignment with your partner(s). Asking is learning. • Know what your target is and develop and implement a plan to meet it.
Music and Podcasts • Song lyrics are teacher-directed instruction; they are to be read and studied for pronunciation and usage of language targets, the same as the textbook. There will be summary questioning. • Podcasts are teacher-directed instruction; they are to be heard actively, prompting you to make connections between what you hear and your own life. There will be summary questioning.
Differentiated Instruction • • Everybody learns differently. Equal is not always fair. Trust in my judgment. Only worry about your work and your success with your task. • Stay with your designated group if grouping takes place. • If I am busy in another place, write your question or concern on a piece of paper and pass it to me. As soon as I can come to you, I will come with your answer.
For Teacher Only • • • • Answer/Use phone Answer door Open/close window/blinds Move desks Move trashcans Use technology (unless specifically assigned) Go behind desk Open rolly cart Distribute supplies (unless specifically assigned) Address student questions (unless specifically assigned) Reprimand/redirect students Access cabinets Make management decisions
The Answer is No • Can I go to the bathroom? • Can I go take a test/makeup work/get tutoring for another class during your class? • Can I use your phone? • Can my friend deliver me something here? • Can I skip class in your room? • Can I stay with you after class and get a note to my next class? • Can I be exempt because I was absent? • Can you give me a pencil, paper, etc?
Se Prohibe(n) • • • Working on anything other than Spanish during class Sleeping during class/positioning yourself to sleep Store your things here Food, candy, gum, drinks in to-go cups, makeup, hairbrush, lotion during class (neither using NOR passing) Cell phones, electronics, hats, glasses, hoods Profanity Mocking/Bullying Leaving room for any reason during the first or last ten minutes of class. Wasting my time with argument (Thanks!)
Hay que • Appreciate the struggle we all face • Play the game • Remember what an uneducated/undereducated person suffers day to day • Use the manners you have learned since Pre-Kindergarten • Fake it til you make it • Pretend to be what you plan to be
When absent… • I can not address your missed work during your return to class. You must: Visit me before or after school Check the website Ask a dependable friend Email me @smtaylor@wsfcs. k 12. nc. us • You are expected to move yourself along when out; absence does not exempt you from anything. • Chapter/Unit tests will not be rescheduled for your impending absence.
Tardy • Tardy is any entrance into the room after the sound of the bell has ceased. • Your entire body must be in the room when the bell ceases • Drop your stuff and sign the tardy log immediately with first and last name, date and time. • Write legibly • Focus only on tardy log, not other students • Coming to class, dropping stuff and leaving before tardy bell to other location (including the bathroom) and then returning after tardy bell is TARDY!
When You’re Not Feeling Me • Let me know that you are out of sorts. I care! There are many resources for you that I can access. • Do not cry, “Wolf!” if not necessary. It will use up your credit. • The truth might sometimes be harsh, but don’t get mad if you asked to hear it. • Tough it out as long as possible. You don’t always need a Band-aid. Remember that after high school very few people will care about your needs and feelings. • Write your suggestions, comments, criticisms down email me or use Edmodo; class is a busy place. • Remember: you are one of a group! Your immediate need may be a disruptive force to the whole. Take one for the team and deal!
Going Past You and Me • Remember that I work for you, not against you. • Remember that your cumulative history is in the office. • Remember that I have notes from each day. • Make sure your argument is neither emotional nor personal in order to be respected and taken seriously. • Ask yourself, “What does ‘I do my work’ mean to me and to her? ” • Our conflicts can probably be resolved by you and me, and, if you like, your favorite, trusted teacher. You and I are both humans.
Success and Peace • Do your best to accomplish all assigned tasks • See us as part of a whole • Don’t hate the messenger • Understand that your year is a circle within a circle, not a line.
