Security and Shelter Security and shelter is ensuring a student feels safe and comfortable within the classroom. This includes physical and psychological safety. The first picture is of their cubbies. Cubbies can help students to feel safe, because it is a place specifically for their personal belongings. The second picture is a small couch and chairs. This is a place for students to get cozy while they read.
Social Contact Social contact is about how the classroom environment can encourage or discourage interaction between students and teachers. This is the rug. This where all the students come together to have morning meeting. This is a time for conversation between the children and Mrs. Summerford.
Symbolic Identification Symbolic identification is a way to represent characteristics or goals of students in the classroom. This can be through posters, artwork, or classwork. The class jobs chart is a symbol of student responsibility and society membership. Students can reference it every week to learn their new role within the classroom.
Task Instrumentality Task instrumentality is the degree to which the environment or materials help to complete a task. My example is Mrs. Summerford’s school supply bins. She keeps them stocked so that students can easily access them, in the event they don’t have their own.
Pleasure is making sure the classroom is attractive. Since teachers and students spend most of the school day in the classroom, it should be a place that makes students and teachers feel good. This is the class library. Students are allowed to sit here when they are doing independent reading, or if they are finished with assignments early. It is a space that was created for them to enjoy.
Growth is putting things in the classroom environment that foster growth and learning development. It can be examples of student work, educational activities, or informational posters. One example of student growth is their learning targets. These are the skills and knowledge students will be working on that week.
