Why do we classify? -Classify means to put into groups. We classify because it makes it easier for scientist to study groups.

How DO we classify rocks? By how they are made.

Let’s look at the Rock Cycle.

Igneous Rocks Lava Rocks!!! -bumpy, rough -air bubbles (tiny, large) -different colors: black, grey, white, red -only one is shiny: obsidian (hard)

Sedimentary Rocks -layers -easy to chip, creates more sand -sandy feel -sometimes have stones in layers -may have fossils!!!! -pressure, no extreme heat

Metamorphic Rock -formed by extreme pressure and heat -bands (almost like layers) -hard -is not easily chipped -sometimes crystals are found here -swirls because of extreme pressure and heat
