CLASSIFICATION OF TOURIST

Tourist � Tourist is a person who travels away from his usual environment to a destination and stay there at least 24 hours but less than a year for leisure, business, or other purposes. � Tourists are classified, into four broad categories: �business and professional tourist �leisure and holiday tourists �tourists traveling to visit friends and relatives (VFR) �Youth tourists, including backpackers

1. Business and professional tourist a) Business tourist: Travel is related to business and the world of work. MICE which stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions. b) Education tourists: Travel to another town, city, or country, to study for or improve a qualification.

c) Incentive tourists: They are people who are rewarded in the form of a company-paid holiday for their hard work, or for achieving goals set by their company. d) Health or medical tourist: Travel because they want to visit a holiday spa, needs medical special treatment that is only available away from home, undergo procedures that are cheaper in another country, or are recovering from an illness in a healthier climate.

2. Leisure and holiday tourist a) Adventure tourists: They want an unusual and exciting experience. They want to participate in activities that may be dangerous, such as rock climbing. b) Cultural tourist: They want to experience different cultures, such as San rock art, or cultural related festivals such as the National Art Festival in India. Cultural tourists also prefer to witness the World Heritage Sites of the traveled country.

c) Eco-tourists: Travel to experience nature such as traveling to the Thenmala reserve forest. They travel throughout the world in search of destinations not affected by pollution or much human intervention. d) Leisure tourists: Want to rest and relax and have a break from the usual routine. e) Religious tourists: Want to see and experience places of religious importance.

f) Shopping tourists: Travel to shopping malls, shopping centers, factory shops, . Their main purpose is to buy items. g) Special interest tourists (STI): Have particular interests such as bird watching, food and wine, nature, Fishing, attending Book Fair. h) Sport and recreation tourists: These sorts of tourists either take active part in or just watch sports events. Ex: sport events are the FIFA, Wimbledon Tennis Championship,

3. Tourists traveling to visit friends and relatives(VFR) People want to stay in contact with friends and relatives and travel away from home to visit them.

4. Backpacking or youth tourist This group of tourist is of young age and they travel with minimum luggage and on a limited budget. But they are very passionate and love excitements and adventures, while traveling. They generally have no specific travel schedules and tend to travel independently.
