What is a good teacher? ? ? O Recall our list from Earlier in the course O Some criteria for a good teacher included: Friendly Professional Knowledgeable about their teaching subject (Basically everything the teacher should be) O We concluded that most of our criteria focused heavily on how and what the teacher should be rather then what they should do to make the classroom a good place for learning, discovery and exploration to take place in the classroom with our students.

REMEMBER TO DO YOUR GOOD TEACHER NARRATIVE!!! Which should include the following criteria: O Your personal insight on what a good teacher is. O Reflections O Connections to your practicum and course experiences O 5 minutes or less

Class reading discussion How do we as teachers, motivate all the students to participate in the classroom discourse, especially the shy ones or if only one or two students answering all of the time? 1) Engage Everyone Take the conversation online. Put students into groups and make everyone participate. Provide a safe enough environment for students to make mistakes

What if a student is explaining their reasoning and it makes no sense at all, with non one understanding it? Find something 2) Makes no sense Rephrase the question useful in their answer and work with it Mistakes are okay

How do you assess group assignments? How do you assign a grade to a group of students? 3) Assessment Group assessment and individual assessment Peer assessment and self assessment Have students write a reflection (evidence of participation).

Co-teaching lesson O Magazine flip game F S 1) Through a series of flips and rotations, move the magazine from S (start) to F (finish). 2) Then give your instructions to another group who will try to follow your instructions in order to get the magazine from S to F.

What’s the point? ? ? O Throughout the class last time we emphasized the importance of communication and creating an environment in the classroom were students feel free to share their ideas and express themselves; an environment where the teacher is present to support, and promote student thinking. O An environment where a growth rather than a fixed mindset of thinking is encouraged in our students (as emphasized by the Carol Dweck youtube video). O The use of math language encourages a positive mathematics discourse in the classroom.

Literature O Communicating Mathematically: Comparison of knowledge Structures in Teacher and student discourse in a secondary math classroom by Jingzi Huang et al. (2005) O Suggests that there is a link between classroom discourse and the language used by both students and teachers. O Through communication students are better able to display their knowledge.
