Class aka: socio-economic class Is class a measure of power? ?
Project: to create a “sociological tour” of one of the Septa Regional Rail train lines* (*see the example in our textbook’s insert about Wash D. C. ) ● choose 6 stops on line ● gather data using policymap. com ● gather photos from the web ● analyze the sociological implications about class and about power DUE = Friday 12/19
resources www. septa. org www. policymap. com > navigate to ‘Subscribe’, then ‘Sign Up’ for the ‘Basic’ plan. > when creating your account, choose ‘Student’ from the drop down menu
STEP ONE which stops on your Septa line will you research and highlight in your presentation? > choose 6 stops on the line > use the ‘MAPS’ function to explore the towns/zip codes along your Septa line > seek a range of types of areas and some geographical range, as well
STEP TWO what additional data will we research, besides what is required? > using either the ‘MAPS’ or ‘TABLES’ view, explore your six stops to find out what other data would be interesting to document in your presentation > be sure that the data pertains to class
STEP THREE > create tables of data that compare your six stops in each element of class that you are studying > for example: a bar graph on household income that compares all six stops > copy the charts (using the snipping tool) and enter them into a powerpoint
STEP FOUR > find two to three photos that can represent this stop on the train line. > use them in the powerpoint
STEP FIVE what does all this information mean? > prepare a presentation of your data that points out interesting correlations and patterns, and that proposes explanations for them. >> what did you notice? why do you think these patterns exist? what have you learned about class, about how class relates to power?
