Union Strengths

Industrial Capacity New York alone had more factories than the entire South combined. Why was this an advantage?
Railroads The Union had 22, 000 miles of track, 71% of the nations. Similar advantage in rolling stock. All of the same gauge. Why are these factors so important?
Navy The Northeastern United States was the maritime center of the country. This provided the North with an abundance of trained sailors.
Food Production Northern farms produced consumable crops, grains, fruits, vegetables.
Confederate Strengths
Defensive Tactics The South would have to be invaded, conquered, and brought back into the Union. Weapons and tactics favored this style of warfare. This would allow them to be defending their homeland. Why were these statements true?
Officers The core of the Southern Army's officer corps had been trained at West Point, Jefferson Davis graduated in 1828. Other military schools such as Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel educated Southern officers.
Southern Lifestyle Most soldiers came from small farms and had experience with riding horses and firing weapons.
