5 POINTS FROM THE ARTICLE • In 1875 the Civil Rights act was declared unconstitutional because of what is stated in the 14 th & 13 th Amendments. • The act would have forbidden any discrimination in stores, restaurants, hotels, trains etc. • The decision outraged the blacks and some of the whites because they thought it was the gateway to the legalization of segregation. • In the court a man of the name John Harlan said, “’Whereas it is essential to just government we recognize the equality of all men before the law…’” • It isn’t until 1964 that the Civil Rights Act would be passed.

5 POINTS FROM OUTSIDE RESEARCH • It was signed on March 1, 1875 by President Ulysses Grant. • In the act it stated that if there were any cases that arose under the act, they were renewable by the Supreme Court, without controversy. • The act also stated that if anyone denied any citizen of enjoyment of stores, hotels, restaurants, transportation of any sort and privileges, would have to pay a fine of $500 -$100 o or imprisoned form 30 days to one year. • The act would protect all of the citizen’s civil and legal rights. • The radical Republican Senator Charles Sumner introduced the act in 1870.
